Script academic searches from the CLI

Terminal users don't want to open a browser to check a citation. You just run a command, and your agent hits the `search_crossref` tool to pull exact bibliographic data straight into standard output. This means you can pipe search results into other shell scripts. Ask your headless client to find papers on distributed systems and write the citation counts to a local CSV file.

Batch resolve DOIs via the CrossRef MCP Server

Validating hundreds of academic links in a CI/CD pipeline is trivial now. You point your agent at a directory of markdown files and tell it to check every DOI. It uses the `get_crossref_doi` tool to verify the metadata for 10.1038/nature12373 and others. If a DOI throws an error or the journal name mismatches, the script catches it before you merge the pull request.

Extract author metrics programmatically

Building a database of researchers requires accurate citation data. Your CLI agent can iterate through a list of names and execute the `search_crossref_author` tool via the MCP Server for each one. The terminal output gives you their publications sorted by relevance. You can have the agent parse those JSON responses and insert the metrics directly into your Postgres database.

Common questions about CrossRef MCP in Claude Code

Run `claude mcp add --transport http crossref-mcp -- `. Make sure all flags come before the server name.
Yes. Since the client runs headless, you can trigger DOI validation scripts during your CI/CD process. It will fail the build if someone commits an invalid academic reference.
The agent executes the search and returns the bibliographic metadata directly to your terminal. You can then pipe that text into `jq`, grep it, or have the agent format it into a report.
No. The registry provides complete metadata, citation counts, and abstracts when available. It does not host the actual PDF files for the scholarly works.
Your terminal executes these commands through an isolated V8 sandbox on Vinkius. Once the citation data or author metrics return to your CLI, the temporary server instance is destroyed, leaving no trace of your activity.
