Build academic tools with the CrossRef MCP Server
Cline thrives when you give it real data to work with. Tell your agent to build a dashboard tracking recent machine learning papers, and it will use the `search_crossref` tool to fetch live bibliographic data. It writes the React components, imports the citation counts, and renders the UI right in VS Code. You watch it pull actual scholarly works instead of generating fake placeholder text.
Automate bibliography generation
Formatting references manually wastes time. Point Cline at a text file full of raw DOIs and tell it to fix them. The agent fires off the `get_crossref_doi` tool through the MCP connection for every entry. It grabs the exact journal names, author lists, and publication years, then overwrites your file with perfectly formatted citations.
Audit author publication records
You verify researcher credentials inside your editor now. You ask your agent to check an author's background, and it hits the `search_crossref_author` tool. The response includes their entire publication history sorted by relevance. Cline can then generate a markdown report detailing their most cited works and save it directly to your workspace.
