How to Use the GBIF MCP in Windsurf
Let Windsurf's Cascade autonomously map species distribution using 2.4 billion biodiversity records from GBIF.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect GBIF MCP to Windsurf
Create your Vinkius account to connect GBIF to Windsurf and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Find Any Species on Earth
Start with a goal, not a command. Tell Windsurf to "get info on the blue whale." Its Cascade agent uses `search_gbif_species` to find the official taxonomic key, then automatically chains that key into `get_gbif_species` to pull the full profile. You don't prompt each step; Cascade just figures it out. It's the difference between asking for directions and just saying where you want to go.
Map Global Occurrences with this MCP Server
Once Cascade has a species key, it knows what to do next. If your goal is to map where a species lives, it passes that key to `get_gbif_occurrences` to pull every recorded sighting from the database. If your initial request mentioned a location, like "Find red pandas in Nepal," Cascade is smart enough to add the country filter to the query. You get back a clean list of coordinates, ready to be plotted on a map.
Uncover the Full Taxonomic Lineage
Ask Windsurf to "trace the taxonomy of Panthera leo." Cascade connects to the GBIF MCP Server and runs `search_gbif_species` to get the entire classification, from Kingdom down to Genus. This isn't just a simple lookup. It's a single, high-level request that triggers a specific tool to resolve the complete family tree. The result appears in your chat, no extra work required.
Set up GBIF MCP in Windsurf
Prerequisites
- Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)

~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. - 2
Add the GBIF MCP
Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the
mcpServersobject. Replace[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com. - 3
Refresh MCPs
Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.
