Autonomous RAG Pipeline Execution

Give Windsurf a high-level goal, and its Cascade agent handles the rest. It finds the right RAG setup by using `list_workspaces` and `list_pipelines`, then executes your search with `run_pipeline`. You don't have to micromanage the process. This is different from other clients where you have to prompt every single step. Cascade chains the tools together automatically. It figures out the sequence, runs it against your deepset Cloud instance, and gives you the final result.

Find Documents and Source Files

Let Cascade dig through your indexed data for you. It can query your indexes directly with the `search_documents` tool for quick lookups or trigger a full RAG flow with `run_pipeline` for more complex questions. Once it finds what you need, it can follow up with `get_file` to pull the full metadata for the source document. You get the answer and the proof without having to piece it together yourself.

Manage Your Haystack MCP Server from the IDE

You don't have to switch to a browser to see what's going on in your deepset Cloud project. Just ask Windsurf to `list_pipelines` or check what's been uploaded with `list_files`. Cascade uses this information to plan its next move, giving it real-time context about your environment. It's a smarter way to work with your own data.

Setup guide

Set up Haystack (deepset Cloud) MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

Add the Haystack (deepset Cloud) MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Haystack (deepset Cloud) payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Haystack (deepset Cloud) tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about Haystack (deepset Cloud) MCP in Windsurf

You give Windsurf a question, and its Cascade agent uses the `run_pipeline` tool on your Haystack (deepset Cloud) setup. It automatically finds the right pipeline, executes the search against your data, and returns the answer.
Yes. You can ask it to `list_files` to see what's available in a workspace. Cascade can also use the `get_file` tool to fetch metadata for a specific file after a search.
The most direct way is to just state your goal. Windsurf's Cascade agent will figure out it needs to use `run_pipeline` or `search_documents` and execute it for you. You don't need to specify the tool name.
Absolutely. Just ask Windsurf to 'list my pipelines'. It will use the `list_pipelines` tool to get a current list from your connected Haystack (deepset Cloud) workspace.
Your query text and any specified IDs for pipelines or workspaces are sent to the MCP server. This server runs in a temporary, isolated sandbox on Vinkius and is destroyed after your request is complete. Your deepset Cloud credentials are not exposed to the client.
