Map the Marvel universe with your MCP Server

The `list_characters` tool searches the Marvel database by name so your agent can grab the exact numeric ID. You need that ID because the OpenAI Agents SDK relies on precise inputs to trigger the next step in your workflow. Passing a raw string like "Spider-Man" directly into a detail fetch simply fails. Once the agent has the ID, it hits `get_character` to pull the full metadata payload. This returns the description, thumbnail URLs, and a massive list of comic appearances. Built-in guardrails validate the response before handing the data off to another specialized agent.

Trace massive crossover events

Your agent uses `list_events` to locate major story arcs like Secret Wars or Civil War. It returns the start and end dates along with issue counts. If you need the granular details, the agent follows up with `get_event` to map exactly which characters and series were involved. You can also track ongoing runs with `get_series`. This pulls the total issue count, publication years, and cover thumbnails. Tracing these calls through the OpenAI dashboard shows exactly how your agent navigated from a broad event search down to a specific limited run.

Pull exact issue details and creator credits

Use `list_comics` to filter issues by a specific character ID. The agent retrieves publication dates, formats, and cover images for a maximum of 100 results per pagination offset. From there, `get_comic` extracts the exact prices and creator credits for a single issue. Finding who wrote or drew a book takes two steps. The `list_creators` tool searches by first or last name prefix to find the creator's ID. Then `get_creator` returns their primary roles and a complete list of series they worked on.

Setup guide

Set up Marvel Comics MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Marvel Comics tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Marvel Comics tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Marvel Comics tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Marvel Comics Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Marvel Comics tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Marvel Comics MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Install the openai-agents package via pip. Initialize MCPServerStreamableHttp with your Vinkius endpoint URL and pass it to the agent constructor. Set cacheToolsList=True so your agent auto-discovers the tools faster.
Yes. The agent calls list_characters with a name string to retrieve the numeric ID. It then uses that ID to fetch deep lore.
It handles limits and offsets natively. Tools like list_series and list_comics cap at 100 results per request. Your agent can loop through the offsets to build a complete list.
The agent runs get_comic on the issue ID. The response includes a nested list of creators and their specific roles.
We run the MCP Server in a zero-trust V8 Isolate sandbox. When your agent fetches character metadata or issue summaries, the connection is entirely ephemeral. Vinkius drops the container the moment the request finishes.
