Index Messenger for LlamaIndex RAG

The `get_messages` tool pulls raw chat transcripts via the MCP Server and feeds them to your LlamaIndex ingestion pipeline. The framework parses these transcripts, generates embeddings, and stores them in your vector database. This setup lets your agent perform semantic search over past customer interactions. Instead of hallucinating, the agent queries the vector store to find how similar customer issues were resolved.

Ground agent responses in page settings

The `get_page_settings` tool retrieves your current Facebook configuration directly into your LlamaIndex knowledge base. Your agent reads these settings to ensure its answers align with your official page rules. The agent also calls `get_page_info` to fetch basic page details. This live metadata is injected into the prompt context, keeping the agent's knowledge accurate without manual updates.

Send context-grounded replies

The `send_message` tool executes outbound replies directly from your LlamaIndex query engine. When a customer asks a question, the engine retrieves relevant documents, formulates a response, and triggers the tool. To keep responses structured, the agent queries `list_message_creative` to find approved layouts. It merges your indexed knowledge with these templates before sending the final message.

Setup guide

Set up Messenger MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Messenger MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Messenger tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Messenger data")

Common questions about Messenger MCP in LlamaIndex

You use the `llama-index-tools-mcp` package to connect to the MCP Server. The `get_messages` tool pulls the conversation history, which the framework indexes into your vector store.
Yes. You pass the `send_message` tool to your `FunctionAgent`. The agent queries your index for the correct answer and then calls the tool to reply to the user.
You use the allowed_tools filter when initializing your MCP client spec. This lets you restrict the agent to read-only tools like `list_conversations` and `get_messages` if you want to prevent automated replies.
Yes. The agent uses `get_page_info` to pull your page's metadata. This data is indexed so your agent always knows your page's current name and category.
Vinkius runs the MCP Server in a zero-trust, ephemeral sandbox. We never cache your Facebook Page settings or persona details, nor do we expose them to external networks.
