Feed live news directly into BigQuery

Turn real-time news into structured data for analysis. A Gemini agent can use this MCP Server to call `get_headlines_by_source` on a schedule, pulling the latest from sources you trust. The agent can then directly insert these results into a BigQuery table. From there, you can run analysis, build Looker dashboards, or use Gemini's long-context window to summarize thousands of articles at once. It connects your agent's actions to your existing GCP data pipeline.

Build market intelligence workflows

Go beyond simple news reading. Task an agent to perform market intelligence by tracking specific companies or trends. It can use `get_articles_from_domains` to monitor your competitors' blogs or `search_articles` with industry-specific keywords. Because Google ADK is designed for enterprise use, you can build agents that deliver daily intelligence reports as part of a larger business process. This turns the NewsAPI into a source for actionable business data, not just headlines.

Add a NewsAPI MCP Server on Google Cloud

Integrating this server into your Google Cloud-based agent is straightforward. The `McpToolset` from the Google ADK connects to the Vinkius endpoint with one line of code. Your agent, running on Vertex AI, can then invoke tools like `get_recent_articles` as if they were native functions. There's no complex setup. It's designed to work within the Google ecosystem, letting your Gemini agent access external news data without leaving its native environment. You can even filter which of the 10 tools are exposed to the agent.

Setup guide

Set up NewsAPI MCP in Google ADK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • google-adk package (pip install google-adk)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Google ADK

    Run pip install google-adk to install the Agent Development Kit. MCP support is included via the McpToolset class.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use McpToolset.from_server() with SseServerParams pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create an LlmAgent

    Pass the returned mcp_tools list directly to LlmAgent(tools=mcp_tools). The ADK maps each MCP tool to a native Gemini function call — no manual schema definitions required.

  4. 4

    Run with any Gemini model

    The agent works with any Gemini model (gemini-2.0-flash, gemini-2.5-pro, etc.). Copy the full example on the right to get started with NewsAPI tools in your ADK agent.

agent.py
from google.adk.agents import LlmAgent
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_toolset import McpToolset
from google.adk.tools.mcp_tool.mcp_session_manager import SseServerParams

# Connect to the MCP via SSE
mcp_tools, exit_stack = await McpToolset.from_server(
    connection_params=SseServerParams(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    )
)

# Create your agent with auto-discovered tools
agent = LlmAgent(
    name="NewsAPI_agent",
    model="gemini-2.0-flash",
    instruction="You have access to NewsAPI tools via MCP.",
    tools=mcp_tools,
)

Common questions about NewsAPI MCP in Google ADK

The agent can fetch articles using `search_articles` and pipe the data into BigQuery. Once in BigQuery, you can use standard SQL queries or Vertex AI to identify trends, sentiment, and key topics over time.
Yes. When you create the `McpToolset` in your Google ADK code, you can pass an optional `tool_names` filter. This lets you expose only specific tools, like `search_headlines`, while hiding others.
Absolutely. The agent can call any NewsAPI tool, get the structured JSON response, and then use a BigQuery tool to insert that data directly into a table. It's a common pattern for building data analysis pipelines.
Use the `get_headlines_by_source` tool. Your agent just needs to provide the source IDs, like 'cnn' or 'the-verge', and the MCP server will return only headlines from those specific publications.
The server handles news data such as article content, publication dates, and source URLs. Security is handled by the Vinkius platform, which runs each MCP Server in a V8 Isolate sandbox. This means the process is completely isolated from other systems and your GCP credentials.
