Chain together deep knowledge retrieval

Your agent can start by calling `list_navigation` to map the site structure before deciding which files to inspect. This prevents unnecessary requests by ignoring irrelevant branches of your knowledge base. LangChain handles these decisions as sequential steps. The output from one tool becomes the input for the next, allowing your agent to refine its search based on actual file metadata.

Trace every tool call in LangSmith

Every interaction with the Obsidian Publish MCP server gets logged through your existing infrastructure. You see exactly what your agent asked for and how the server replied. Using `get_file` or `get_metadata` within a chain means you have full visibility into latency and token usage. It’s perfect for debugging complex pipelines where information flow is critical.

Aggregate data across your workspace

You can connect this server alongside other tools to create a unified data pipeline. An agent might query a database and then use `site_info` to contextualize the findings against your published documentation. This setup allows for multi-server aggregation. LangChain treats the Obsidian Publish tools as native components, letting you build agents that draw from both internal notes and external APIs.

Setup guide

Set up Obsidian Publish MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes Obsidian Publish tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "obsidian-publish-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent Obsidian Publish transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about Obsidian Publish MCP in LangChain

You don't sync; you connect. Use the MCP server to provide your LangChain agent with real-time access to your markdown files. It reads directly from the live site.
Yes. By using `list_navigation` first, your agent builds a map of the vault. It only requests the files it actually needs instead of downloading the entire database.
It does, provided you have the correct authentication token. Once configured, your agent accesses private notes just like public ones.
The `get_file` tool retrieves both text and binary assets. LangChain receives the data stream, which you can then process or store as needed.
Your data stays within the connection between the client and the server. This MCP server only accesses the specific markdown files you request through the API.
