Batch process meter data collection.

Write a CLI script that loops through all authorized meters found via `list_meters`. For every UID, it calls `get_intervals` to pull usage data. This makes running bulk energy analysis across an entire portfolio simple and headless.

Automate authorization status monitoring.

Need a cron job that checks for stalled data collection? You can pipe the output of `get_events` to filter for specific statuses, like 'collection completed' or 'error'. This is essential for robust CI/CD pipelines.

Retrieve utility billing history for auditing.

Use a simple command to call `get_bills`, passing the required meter UID(s) as comma-separated values. The output gives you immediate access to total cost, start/end dates, and energy usage for compliance reporting.

Common questions about UtilityAPI MCP in Claude Code

You must use `get_intervals`. This provides detailed time-series readings (hourly/15-min) that are much more useful than a simple bill summary. Always ensure the meter UID is correct before running this command.
Use `get_billing_summaries`. This function gives you cost and period summaries for your entire account. If you need a specific meter's summary, append its ID as an optional parameter.
Run `list_utilities`. This command outputs all supported companies and their required utility codes. You need these codes to successfully run the `create_auth_form` tool.
Use `get_events`. This stream provides real-time status updates for data collection workflows, including when a new authorization is created or an error occurs. It’s critical for debugging pipelines.
The server handles billing periods, meter UIDs, energy usage (kWh or therms), and cost data. When scripting, process the returned data to strip out any unnecessary identifying metadata before logging results.
