Automate full energy usage analysis with the MCP Server.

Windsurf's Cascade agent can pull a customer's complete picture—both financial and technical. It runs `get_meter_data` on a given meter UID, pulling combined bill history and granular interval data in one go. You set the goal (e.g., 'Find peak usage'), and Cascade handles the API calls.

Manage customer utility access flows.

Need to onboard a new client? Use `create_auth_form` first; this returns a form UID you redirect customers to. Once they authorize, cascade monitors the status via `get_events`. This ensures your system only tries to pull data once authorization is complete.

Analyze entire utility portfolios.

You can list all meters using `list_meters`, then loop through those UIDs. For each meter, cascade calls `get_intervals` to get time-series readings and also uses `list_utilities` to confirm the correct provider code. It lets you scale up analysis across hundreds of service points.

Setup guide

Set up UtilityAPI MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the UtilityAPI MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my UtilityAPI payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the UtilityAPI tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about UtilityAPI MCP in Windsurf

First, run `list_authorizations`. This shows which customers have granted access. If you only want to track specific meters, use the optional `referrals` parameter in that function.
The server provides three main views: full billing records (`get_bills`), detailed usage intervals (15-minute/hourly readings from `get_intervals`), and combined reports via `get_meter_data`. You get both the cost side and the technical data.
Run `test_form_submission`. This simulates the full process by accepting a form ID from your development environment. It spits out a referral code you can then use with `list_authorizations` to verify test data.
Yes, it supports over 100 US utilities. You find the correct codes using `list_utilities`. Since Windsurf is autonomous, it handles swapping these required parameters when planning a multi-tool sequence.
The server touches meter UID and energy usage (kWh or therms) data. Always make sure your client is running in an isolated environment, like the Vinkius sandbox. Never expose credentials or sensitive metadata unnecessarily.
