Working with the MCP Server in a Type-Safe Way

The `list_workos_organizations` tool gives you an exact list of organizations. Because Pydantic validates every response, your agent knows exactly what fields and types to expect for each record. When building production pipelines, this prevents silent failures caused by unexpected API output.

Validating Directory Sync Data

Need to check users? Use `list_directory_users`. If the underlying WorkOS data changes or returns an unknown field, Pydantic catches it. Your agent fails loudly instead of hallucinating fields. It works the same way when you list groups using `list_directory_groups`.

Retrieving Organizational Status

To get general org info, run `get_organization_details`. If the API returns a field that doesn't match your defined Pydantic model, the agent stops. This is key for reliable code. You can also check SSO status using `list_sso_connections` and validate the results with type checking.

Setup guide

Set up WorkOS MCP in Pydantic AI

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • pydantic-ai-slim[fastmcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install Pydantic AI with FastMCP

    Run pip install "pydantic-ai-slim[fastmcp]". The FastMCP toolset replaces the deprecated MCPServerHTTP class with full protocol support.

  2. 2

    Configure the FastMCPToolset

    Pass a JSON-style config dict to FastMCPToolset with your Vinkius URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports Streamable HTTP, SSE, and Stdio transports.

  3. 3

    Create and run your agent

    Pass the toolset to Agent(toolsets=[toolset]) and call agent.run(). Swap openai:gpt-4o for any supported model — Anthropic, Google, Mistral, or Groq.

agent.py
from pydantic_ai import Agent
from pydantic_ai.toolsets.fastmcp import FastMCPToolset

toolset = FastMCPToolset({
    "mcpServers": {
        "workos-mcp": {
            "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
        }
    }
})

agent = Agent(
    "openai:gpt-4o",
    toolsets=[toolset],
    system_prompt="You have access to WorkOS tools.",
)

result = await agent.run("List recent WorkOS transactions")
print(result.output)

Common questions about WorkOS MCP in Pydantic AI

The agent uses tools like `create_workos_organization` or `list_workos_organizations`. Because the response is validated, you're guaranteed that the organization data returned matches your expected Python schema.
Yes. Use `list_directories` first to find all sync instances. Then, use `list_directory_users` or `list_directory_groups`. The response structure is always validated against your models.
You call `get_audit_log_events` to pull the event stream. Since this data is typed, you can process every single log event confidently without needing extra checks for field existence.
The MCP Server handles organizational records, user lists, group memberships, SSO details, and audit log events. The primary data types are structured strings (names, IDs) and complex event objects.
If you call `get_directory_details`, the returned metadata is instantly validated. If the API gives you unexpected data, your agent fails immediately with a specific validation error—no silent corruption.
