How to execute custom API requests with your AI

Connect Apideck to your AI client to bridge the gap between standard tools and specific service endpoints. Once connected, your agent can trigger any action supported by the downstream API.

Ask AI about this page

Short answer

How can my AI make custom API calls?

Your AI uses the execute_proxy tool to act as a bridge to downstream services. It sends your specific instructions directly to the target endpoint, allowing it to perform actions that aren't part of a standard toolset. This setup lets you extend your agent's reach to any service with a reachable API.

The results of your request.

Where your requests land.

The proxy handles the heavy lifting of the connection.

SUCCESS

Direct API execution

The agent sends the request through the proxy. The downstream service processes it and returns the raw response to your chat.

DATA

Parsed responses

Your AI reads the JSON or text returned by the service. It then interprets that data to answer your questions or update your workflow.

ERROR

Failure handling

If the endpoint returns a 400 or 500 error, your AI sees the status code. It can then explain exactly why the request failed.

HUMAN

Manual intervention

If a request requires a specific authentication header or a complex payload the AI can't construct, you'll need to step in and provide the details.

The workflow

What your AI does when a request is triggered.

The agent translates your natural language into a structured network call.

  1. Construct the payload

Your agent looks at your request and builds the necessary JSON body or query parameters required by the target service.

    execute_proxy
  2. Route the request

The agent uses the proxy to send the formatted request to the specific downstream URL you've identified.

    execute_proxy
  3. Receive the response

The proxy catches the incoming data from the service and hands it back to the agent.

    execute_proxy
  4. Interpret results

The agent reads the returned data to confirm the action worked or to extract specific values for your next task.

    execute_proxy

FAQ

How this task behaves.

  • 01

Can the AI make any API call it wants?

The AI can only make calls through the execute_proxy tool. It is limited to the endpoints and methods you instruct it to use.

  • 02

Does the AI store my API keys?

No. Your credentials and sensitive headers are managed securely through the connection, and the AI only uses them to execute the proxy calls.

  • 03

Can the AI delete data in my service?

The AI can only perform a DELETE request if you explicitly tell it to do so for a specific endpoint. It won't perform destructive actions on its own.

  • 04

What happens if the API requires a complex OAuth flow?

The proxy handles the execution, but you must ensure the connection is established so the agent has the necessary authorization to hit the endpoint.

  • 05

Can the AI bypass security protocols?

No. The proxy respects the authentication and security requirements of the target service. If the service rejects the request, the AI cannot force it through.
