The probability comes from NOAA's OVATION model, which reports what the upper atmosphere is doing. It cannot see your clouds or your midnight sun. You still need a dark, clear sky. and aurora near the equator edge of the oval is often faint, low on the horizon, and best photographed with a long exposure rather than judged by eye.
