How to analyze coverage trends with your AI

Connect Coveralls to your AI client to turn raw coverage JSON into actionable insights. Your agent handles the data extraction so you can focus on the trends.

Ask AI about this page

Short answer

How can I track coverage regressions using AI?

Your AI pulls raw coverage data from specific builds, jobs, or source files to identify exactly where coverage is dropping. It compares these snapshots to highlight regressions and long-term trends. You get a clear view of your testing health without manual JSON parsing.

Where the data goes.

Coverage insights and alerts.

The AI processes raw coverage metrics into these specific outcomes.

REGRESSION

Identify coverage drops

The AI compares current build data against previous runs. It flags specific files or lines where coverage has decreased.

TRENDS

Track long-term health

Your agent aggregates data across multiple jobs or builds. It maps out how your test coverage evolves over time.

FILES

Pinpoint weak spots

The AI looks at individual source files to find untested logic. It identifies exactly which files need more tests.

HUMAN

Review and fix

The AI provides the data, but you decide which regressions matter. You use these insights to guide your next testing sprint.

The workflow

What your AI does when the data arrives.

Your agent acts as the bridge between Coveralls and your analysis.

  1. Fetch build data

The AI pulls the raw JSON coverage metrics for a specific build to establish a baseline.

    get_build_web_data
  2. Inspect job metrics

It drills down into specific job results to see how individual test suites are performing.

    get_job_web_data
  3. Analyze source files

The agent examines coverage at the file level to find specific gaps in your logic.

    get_file_web_data
  4. Audit the repository

It pulls high-level coverage stats for the entire repo to provide a macro view of project health.

    get_repo_web_data

  • Compare the coverage in the latest build for the 'auth-service' repo against the previous one.

  • Show me the coverage trends for the 'payment-gateway' repository over the last five builds.

  • Identify which files in the 'api-core' repo have seen the biggest coverage drop in the last week.

  • Check the coverage for the 'data-processor' job and tell me if it meets our 80% threshold.

FAQ

How the coverage analysis works.

  • 01

Can the AI change my coverage settings in Coveralls?

No. The AI can only read coverage data from builds, jobs, files, and repos. It cannot modify your Coveralls configuration or settings.

  • 02

Does the AI write new tests for me?

No. The AI identifies where coverage is missing, but it does not generate or commit new test code to your repository.

  • 03

How does the AI know which build to look at?

You tell the AI which build, job, or repo to analyze in your prompt. It uses that information to fetch the correct JSON data.

  • 04

Can I use this with Cursor or VS Code?

Yes. As long as your client is MCP-compatible, you can use Coveralls with Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, or Claude.

  • 05

Can the AI delete old build data?

No. The tools only allow the AI to retrieve data. It has no capability to delete or overwrite any information in Coveralls.
