How to create isolated database branches with your AI

Connect Neon to your AI client to spin up ephemeral database environments for testing. Once connected, your agent handles the heavy lifting of cloning and connection management.

Ask AI about this page

Short answer

How can I use my AI to branch my Neon database?

Tell your AI to create a new branch from a specific Neon project. It will clone your data into a new, isolated environment and provide the connection string you need to start testing immediately.

The outcomes

What you get from your AI

The AI manages the lifecycle of your testing environments.

CLONE

Instant data copies

The AI creates a new branch that mirrors your existing data. You get a clean slate for testing without any risk to your main database.

ACCESS

Ready to use URIs

Your agent pulls the connection details for the new branch. You can plug these straight into your local dev environment or application config.

MANAGE

Project oversight

The AI can look through your existing Neon projects to find the right source for a branch. It keeps track of what you have active.

HUMAN

Manual cleanup

The AI creates the branches, but you decide when they are no longer needed. You'll need to manually delete branches in the Neon console once testing is done.

The workflow

What your AI does when you ask for a branch.

The AI moves from identifying your data to handing you a live connection.

  1. Locate your project

The AI scans your Neon account to find the specific database you want to copy.

    list_projectsget_project
  2. Spawn the branch

The agent instructs Neon to create a new, isolated branch from your chosen project.

    create_branch
  3. Verify the branch

The AI checks that the new branch was created successfully and is ready for traffic.

    get_branch
  4. Provide access

The AI retrieves the connection string so you can point your code to the new environment.

    get_connection_uri

  • List my Neon projects so I can pick one to branch.

  • Create a new branch named 'feature-test-v2' from my 'production-db' project.

  • Get the connection URI for the branch I just created.

  • Find the project called 'user-service-db' and tell me its ID.

FAQ

How the Neon Connector behaves

  • 01

Can the AI delete my production database?

No. The available tools only allow for listing projects, getting project details, creating branches, getting branch details, and retrieving connection URIs. There is no tool to delete projects or branches.

  • 02

Does branching change my main database?

No. Creating a branch creates a copy. Your original database remains untouched and isolated from any changes you make in the new branch.

  • 03

Can the AI change my database schema?

No. The AI can create the environment and give you the connection string, but it cannot run SQL commands or modify your schema directly.

  • 04

How do I know which project to branch?

You can ask your AI to list your projects first to see exactly what is available in your Neon account.

  • 05

Will the AI automatically delete branches when I'm done?

No. The AI does not have a tool to delete branches. You must manage the removal of old branches yourself through the Neon dashboard.
