How to control batch processing jobs with your AI

Connect OpenAI to your AI client to handle massive request volumes without hitting rate limits or blowing your budget.

Ask AI about this page

Short answer

How can I manage large API batches with my AI?

Your AI uses specific tools to trigger, monitor, and kill large-scale request batches. This gives you a way to run heavy workloads at a lower cost while maintaining oversight of every job. You can see exactly what's running and stop anything that's gone wrong.

Batch management outcomes

What you get

The direct results of letting your agent handle the API workload.

COST

Lowered API spend

The AI sets up batch jobs that use discounted rates. You get the same model performance for a fraction of the price.

STATUS

Real-time job tracking

Your agent checks the progress of active batches. You'll know exactly when a job finishes or if it hits an error.

CONTROL

Immediate job cancellation

If a batch is behaving badly or wasting credits, your AI stops it instantly. This prevents runaway costs from unfinished tasks.

HUMAN

Manual oversight required

The AI handles the heavy lifting, but you decide when to start a new batch or kill a running one. You stay in the driver's seat.

The workflow

What your AI does when <the thing arrives>.

The AI acts as your interface for the OpenAI batch API.

  1. Initialize the job

Your agent prepares the request payload and submits it to the API to start a new batch process.

    create_batch
  2. Monitor progress

The AI looks up all current jobs to see which ones are pending, running, or completed.

    list_batches
  3. Check specific results

When you need details on a single job, the AI pulls the specific status and output data for that ID.

    get_batch
  4. Stop execution

If you see an error or a mistake in the input, the AI kills the job to save your credits.

    cancel_batch

FAQ

How batch processing behaves

  • 01

Can my AI create a batch job without me providing the file?

No. You must provide the source data or the file path for the AI to use when starting a job.

  • 02

Will the AI automatically cancel a failed batch?

No. The AI will report the failure to you, but you must tell it to cancel the job if you want to stop it.

  • 03

Can the AI delete my previous batch history?

No. The tools only allow for creating, listing, getting, or canceling jobs. They cannot delete historical records.

  • 04

Can the AI change the model used in an active batch?

No. Once a batch is created, the model is set. You would need to cancel it and start a new one.

  • 05

How does the AI know if a batch is finished?

The AI uses the get_batch tool to check the status field of the specific job.
