How to search and query your media library with your AI

Connect Plex to your AI client to turn your media collection into a searchable database. You can ask for specific titles or deep details about your content.

Ask AI about this page

Short answer

Can I ask my AI to find things in my Plex library?

Yes. Your AI uses the Plex MCP to scan your library, find specific titles, and pull metadata like summaries or cast lists. You'll get specific answers instead of scrolling through menus.

Where every search lands.

The outcomes of your queries

Depending on what you ask, your AI will deliver different types of information from your Plex server.

CONTENT

Direct title matches

The AI finds the exact movie or show you mentioned. You get the title and basic info immediately.

DETAILS

Deep metadata pulls

Ask for cast lists or plot summaries. The AI pulls these details directly from your library files.

LISTS

Filtered collections

Ask for all horror movies or specific music genres. The AI gathers these items into a single list.

HUMAN

Manual playback

The AI finds the content, but you still need to open your Plex app to actually hit play.

The workflow

What your AI does when you ask a question.

The AI follows a logical path to turn your natural language into a specific library query.

  1. Locating the item

The AI looks through your entire library to find the specific movie, show, or song you named.

    search_library
  2. Gathering details

Once the item is found, the AI pulls the specific text and data you asked for, like a summary.

    get_metadata
  3. Browsing folders

If you ask for a collection or a folder, the AI looks inside that specific library section.

    get_children
  4. Listing content

The AI scans the library to provide a full list of what is available in a specific category.

    get_library_content

FAQ

How this task behaves

  • 01

Can my AI play movies for me?

No. The AI can find the movies and give you information about them, but it cannot trigger playback in your Plex app.

  • 02

Can the AI delete files from my Plex server?

No. This MCP only has tools to read and search your library. It cannot delete, move, or modify your media files.

  • 03

Does the AI know about movies not in my library?

No. The AI only sees what is inside your specific Plex library. It won't pull info for movies you don't own.

  • 04

Can I use this with any AI client?

Yes, as long as the client is MCP-compatible, like Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf.

  • 05

Can the AI change my library metadata?

No. The tools are limited to searching and retrieving data. You cannot use the AI to edit titles or posters.
