Short answer
How can I start and track agent work in chat?
You tell your AI to start a task, which triggers a Relevance AI agent to begin its workflow. You can then check on the status or see a full list of everything the agent is currently working on.
Task outcomes
Where your agent's work lands.
The AI manages the lifecycle of every task it starts.
ACTIVE
Running workflows
The AI identifies tasks currently in progress. You get a clear view of what is happening right now.
COMPLETED
Finished work
Once an agent finishes its job, the status updates. You can review the results of the completed task.
PENDING
Queued jobs
If the agent is busy, tasks sit in a queue. Your AI can tell you exactly how many jobs are waiting.
HUMAN
Manual intervention
If a task hits a snag or requires a decision, the AI flags it. You step in to provide the necessary input.
The workflow
What your AI does when you request a task.
The AI handles the execution and tracking.
Initiate work
Your AI sends a command to Relevance AI to kick off a specific autonomous agent workflow.

How the agent tasks behave
- 01
Can the AI stop a task once it has started?
No. The current tools only allow for triggering, listing, and checking status; they do not include a tool to cancel or kill a running task.
- 02
Can my AI change the settings of the Relevance AI agent?
No. The AI can only trigger existing workflows or check on their progress. It cannot modify the underlying agent configuration.
- 03
How does the AI know if a task failed?
The AI uses the status tool to see if a task has moved to a failed state, then reports that status to you.
- 04
Can I see the specific data output from a task?
The AI can check the status of a task, but it only reports on the progress and state of the job itself.
- 05
Does the AI run these tasks in the background?
Yes. Once the command is sent, the agent works independently in Relevance AI while you continue your conversation.
