The manual process of tracking legal case finances is brutal. Solved with Vinkius AI Gateway
Right now, checking a client's financial status means jumping between the 'Matter View,' downloading activity logs, cross-referencing those against billing sheets to spot unbilled time, and then manually running reports for outstanding invoices. It’s an exhausting cycle of clicks, downloads, and copy-pasting figures into spreadsheets.
With this MCP, you just ask your agent what the financial status is. The system automatically pulls together data from activity logs, pending bills, and open matters. You get a single, conversational summary that tells you exactly where the revenue gaps are.
Get full control of case file records with Clio MCP.
Manual oversight requires opening separate tabs for every piece of information: one tab for communications, another for tasks, and yet a third for documents. You have to remember which matter ID belongs where, leading to data silos that slow down your whole team.
Now, you ask the agent to pull all related items—whether it’s notes from `create_note` or files from `list_documents`—and it aggregates everything into one clean response. You're done jumping around; you just talk.
What your AI can actually do with this
This MCP lets you take charge of complex legal operations using only natural language. Imagine asking your AI client to pull together a summary of all outstanding invoices for Global Tech and cross-reference that with the last five communications logged on their account. It handles it. You don't have to navigate multiple tabs or manually export data sets just to get an overview.
The system acts like a dedicated legal operations specialist, managing everything from initial case setup to final billing reconciliation.
It maintains full visibility over your firm’s entire scope: you can list all active matters, check the status of tasks, and even access client contact details so you always know who's involved. This functionality is housed within the Vinkius catalog, making it easy to connect this power to any MCP-compatible client like Claude or Cursor.
You simply talk through your needs—like logging a new time entry for a specific case or finding all documents associated with an old matter number—and the system executes the necessary actions automatically.
019dd0d0-a3a0-71aa-8c87-4272e66aabcc Here's how it actually works
The bottom line is you get an automated, conversational layer over your entire Clio database, letting you manage complex tasks without writing any code.
Subscribe to this MCP and set up a Developer Application in your Clio account. This initial setup is quick and requires getting your Client ID and Secret.
Connect those credentials by clicking 'Connect with Clio' inside your AI client, authorizing the necessary read/write access.
Start giving commands: Ask your agent to list all open cases or log a time entry for yesterday. Your MCP executes the action against your live data.
Who is this actually for?
Attorneys and legal administrators who spend too much time jumping between the main portal dashboard, billing sheets, and separate document folders. If you feel like your day is spent copy-pasting data or manually checking deadlines across five different tabs, this MCP saves you hours.
They use it to instantly check case summaries and billable hour totals via natural language commands while drafting a client letter.
They manage the firm's entire workflow by monitoring task lists, creating new contacts, and keeping track of all logged communications for compliance.
They handle day-to-day operations like logging time entries or finding specific case documents without needing deep training on the portal's complex navigation system.
What Changes When You Connect
Stop digging through complex matter tables. With the list_matters tool, you can get an instant list of all open or closed cases simply by asking your agent. You see what’s active without leaving your chat window.
Cut down on billing reconciliation time. By using list_activities, you pull every recorded time entry and expense for a case in one go, making it easy to check billable hour targets before sending an invoice.
Never lose track of client details again. Use the MCP's ability to search contacts so you can instantly find a person’s phone number or address without guessing which folder they live in.
Maintain perfect oversight of firm activity. The agent can pull list_communications to show all logged calls and emails for a matter, giving you a single source of truth on client interaction history.
Simplify case file management. Instead of manually browsing the document portal, you ask your agent to list documents for a matter, getting immediate access to files by name and date.
See it in action
Reconciling Quarterly Billing
A paralegal needs to verify all time logged for Q2. They ask their agent: 'Show me the billable activity and outstanding invoices for matters associated with Global Tech.' The MCP runs list_activities and list_bills, giving them a single financial overview.
Onboarding a New Client
An attorney needs to start a new case. They ask the agent: 'Create a matter for Acme Legal, referencing their contact ID.' The MCP first checks get_contact and then executes create_matter, ensuring all necessary data is linked correctly from the start.
Preparing for a Court Date
A legal administrator needs to review everything about an upcoming trial. They ask the agent to 'List tasks and documents for Matter XYZ.' The MCP executes list_tasks and list_documents, providing both deadlines and all supporting files.
Client Outreach Follow-up
An attorney wants to write a summary of the last interaction. They ask: 'What were the notes, calls, and calendar entries for John Smith?' The MCP aggregates data from list_communications, list_notes, and list_calendar_entries into one digestible report.
The honest tradeoffs
What to watch out for, and the recommended way to handle each one.
Trying to manage billing manually
Opening the portal, clicking 'Billing,' then navigating to 'Activity Log,' filtering by date range, and exporting a CSV file. This takes at least 10 minutes of clicks.
Just ask your agent: 'Show me all time entries for client XYZ in the last month.' The MCP uses list_activities directly, giving you the data instantly without any manual navigation.
Creating a case without proper setup
A new user manually creates a matter number but forgets to link it correctly to the client ID or responsible attorney.
Use the MCP's structured tools. You can first get_contact for the client, and then use that specific contact ID when calling create_matter. This forces correct data linkage.
Searching for a person by memory
Trying to recall if the client's phone number is saved in the main dashboard or buried deep in their document profile.
Use search_contacts with just an email address. It quickly finds the full contact record, including all associated phone numbers and addresses.
When It Fits, When It Doesn't
You should use this MCP if your core job involves managing large volumes of structured legal data: case files, billable hours, client contacts, and deadlines. If you spend more time looking up 'who's who,' or 'when was that due?' than actually doing legal work, this is for you. Don't use it if you only need to draft a simple letter; your agent can do that fine without connecting to Clio. You shouldn't use it just to view basic information about the firm itself—for that, the native portal works. But if you need to action data (like creating a task or logging time), this MCP is essential because it gives your AI client write access via tools like create_matter and create_activity.
