Live currency conversion in Cursor Agent mode

`convert_currency_pair` integrates directly with Cursor's Agent mode to inject real-time conversion math into your active codebase. Instead of writing stubs or hardcoding rates, your editor queries the live API to write and test currency logic on the spot. This setup changes how you write ecommerce or billing features. You ask the editor to generate a checkout helper, and it uses live rates to verify the calculations before saving the file.

Enriched currency metadata for UI generation

`get_enriched_currency_data` provides the exact currency names, symbols, and formatting rules your Cursor agent needs to build localized user interfaces. You get accurate frontend components without manually looking up formatting standards. Since the editor has direct access to this MCP Server tool, it can automatically generate TypeScript interfaces or dropdown components populated with real, current currency details. That stops runtime bugs caused by stale mock files.

Historical rate fetching for data-heavy apps

`get_historical_rates` lets Cursor pull real historical currency data directly into your workspace to populate test databases or seed files. Your editor can generate realistic analytical charts and backtesting scripts using actual historical figures instead of random numbers. By running this MCP tool inside Cursor, you eliminate the tedious step of manually downloading financial datasets. The AI agent queries the API, retrieves the historical JSON, and writes it directly to your test fixtures.

Common questions about ExchangeRate-API MCP in Cursor

Create a `.cursor/mcp.json` file in your project root and define the server configuration under the `mcpServers` object. Cursor will automatically detect the new tools, allowing your AI agent to call them during chat and inline editing sessions.
Yes, Cursor can call `get_latest_rates` to fetch current market values and then write unit tests that validate your application's pricing logic against real-world figures. This ensures your financial code is tested against actual exchange data.
When you ask Cursor to build a currency selector, it uses the ExchangeRate-API tool `list_supported_currencies` to fetch the current list of supported codes. This allows the editor to generate accurate dropdown options and validation schemas matching the active API spec.
No, this server requires an active internet connection to communicate with the ExchangeRate-API endpoints. If you are offline, tools like `convert_currency_pair` will fail, so you should use mock data until your connection is restored.
Only the specific currency codes, dates, and conversion amounts you request are transmitted to the API. Your local source code, database credentials, and proprietary logic remain completely inside your local Cursor environment.
