Geocode physical locations inside VS Code Copilot

The `geocode_address` tool converts written addresses into exact GPS coordinates for your coding tasks. When writing location-aware features, your team can ask VS Code Copilot to fetch real latitude and longitude pairs to verify database constraints. This MCP integration translates raw GPS coordinates back into physical addresses using `reverse_geocode`. It lets VS Code Copilot generate and test data-cleaning scripts using real street data instead of dummy text.

Team-wide routing tools via this MCP Server

Providing accurate travel routes and duration estimates between coordinates is what the `get_directions` tool does. By committing this server config, your entire team can have VS Code Copilot test routing algorithms against real transit or driving data. When handling complex logistics, `get_distance_matrix` calculates travel matrices for multiple origins and destinations. This helps VS Code Copilot write optimized dispatch code using actual travel times from the live road network.

Query elevation and timezone data in your workspace

The `get_timezone` tool retrieves the exact timezone details and daylight saving status for any coordinate. VS Code Copilot uses this to help your team write reliable scheduling code that handles global time offsets correctly. For terrain-sensitive projects, `get_elevation` fetches the exact height above sea level for your target coordinates. This lets VS Code Copilot validate raw geographic data directly within your editor.

Setup guide

Set up Google Maps Platform MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

Add the Google Maps Platform MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Google Maps Platform tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Google Maps Platform transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.
