Stream active bids to the UI with Vercel AI SDK

`list_opportunities` hits the HigherGov database and pulls active federal solicitations directly into your user's view. You hook this tool into your streaming response, letting the client watch data populate row by row. If a user filters for Department of Defense IT contracts, the system fetches the records and renders the table without making them wait for a spinner. You pair this with `get_opportunity` to fetch the deep details when a user clicks a specific row. The Vercel AI SDK handles the tool calls asynchronously, meaning the frontend stays responsive while pulling the NAICS codes, set-aside status, and response deadlines.

Fetch and render awardee histories

`list_awardees` finds companies currently winning government work. Your agent pulls this list and immediately pushes the vendor profiles to the React component. If you need to build a competitor analysis dashboard, you pull the top 10 vendors in a specific sector and display their win rates live. Clicking into a vendor triggers `get_awardee` to pull their exact past performance data. The user sees the vendor's total obligated dollars and active vehicles populate instantly. This setup turns a static search bar into a live intelligence feed.

Serve procurement documents on demand

`get_documents` retrieves the actual PDFs and Excel sheets attached to a federal solicitation. When your user wants to read the Performance Work Statement, the AI client fetches the file links and drops them right into the chat interface. No navigating through clunky government portals. You combine this with `get_agency` to give the user context on who issued the document. The UI displays the agency's budget trends next to the downloadable RFP, giving your users everything they need to start writing a proposal immediately.

Setup guide

Set up HigherGov MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ and a TypeScript project
  • ai + @modelcontextprotocol/sdk packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run npm install ai @modelcontextprotocol/sdk plus your preferred model provider (e.g. @ai-sdk/openai).

  2. 2

    Create the Streamable HTTP transport

    Use StreamableHTTPClientTransport with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Discover and use tools

    Call mcpClient.tools() to auto-discover all HigherGov tools. Pass them directly to generateText() or streamText() — no manual schema definitions needed.

  4. 4

    Works with any model provider

    Swap openai("gpt-4o") for any AI SDK provider — Anthropic, Google, Mistral. The MCP tools work identically across all supported models.

index.ts
import { experimental_createMCPClient as createMCPClient } from "ai";
import { StreamableHTTPClientTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/streamableHttp";
import { generateText } from "ai";
import { openai } from "@ai-sdk/openai";

const transport = new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(
  new URL("https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp")
);

const mcpClient = await createMCPClient({ transport });
const tools = await mcpClient.tools();

const { text } = await generateText({
  model: openai("gpt-4o"),
  tools,
  prompt: "List recent HigherGov transactions",
});

console.log(text);
await mcpClient.close();

Common questions about HigherGov MCP in Vercel AI SDK

Install `@ai-sdk/mcp`. Use `createMCPClient` with the HigherGov endpoint URL. Pass the resulting tools directly into `streamText` or `generateText`.
Yes. The Vercel AI SDK streams `list_contracts` results directly to your React components. Users see the award values and dates appear sequentially.
The MCP standard lets you skip writing custom fetch logic. You hand the server's tools to your AI agent, and it decides when to call `search_by_id` based on the user's prompt.
It does. You can run the HigherGov MCP Server connection in Vercel Edge functions. Just ensure your transport layer uses HTTP.
The server processes public federal procurement data, including vendor names from `get_awardee` and contract dollar amounts from `get_contract`. Vinkius runs this connection in an ephemeral V8 Isolate Sandbox. The session terminates the moment your stream closes, leaving zero cached state behind.
