Team-Wide Field Mapping in VS Code Copilot

The `list_fields` tool brings your complete John Deere field and plot data directly into your shared VS Code Copilot workspace. By checking in a shared configuration file, every developer on your team can query `list_organizations` and `list_clients` in VS Code Copilot. This shared environment ensures that everyone is writing code in VS Code Copilot against the same John Deere schemas. This MCP Server setup allows Copilot to suggest accurate SQL schemas based on actual field boundaries.

Track Machine Locations and Diagnostics as a Team

The `get_machine_locations` tool pulls live GPS coordinates of your John Deere fleet directly into the VS Code Copilot chat panel. When your team is building fleet tracking dashboards, VS Code Copilot can analyze the active machines returned by `list_machines`. To handle equipment failures, developers can run `list_alerts` in VS Code Copilot to see live machine error codes. Copilot can then write custom notification handlers that respond to the exact severity levels of active John Deere field equipment.

Process Agronomic Operations Directly in VS Code

The `get_field_operations` tool extracts John Deere planting, application, and harvest rate metrics directly into your VS Code Copilot environment. Your team can ask VS Code Copilot to generate data pipelines that process these yield metrics. This integration allows for rapid prototyping of farm management software in VS Code. By exposing these John Deere endpoints as MCP tools, VS Code Copilot can instantly verify how your code handles real operator data.

Setup guide

Set up John Deere MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the John Deere MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the John Deere tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent John Deere transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.
