Standardize Lyric Data for Your Team

The `get_lyrics` tool provides a single, consistent source for song lyrics across your engineering team. When Copilot needs lyrics, it calls this tool. Everyone gets the same text from the same API endpoint. This eliminates the 'it works on my machine' problem where developers pull lyrics from different websites with different formatting. You get clean, predictable text every time, which is critical for building reliable features.

Populate UI with Song Suggestions

Use the `suggest_songs` tool to let Copilot's agent help you build out music discovery features. Ask it to 'get a list of song suggestions for "David Bowie" and create a TypeScript interface for them.' The agent will call the tool and generate the code. This is faster than manually searching for song titles and typing them out. It's a practical way to use live data during development, ensuring your UI components are built to handle real-world API responses from the start.

Share This MCP Server via Git

The best part of using this with VS Code Copilot is the shared configuration. You create a `.vscode/mcp.json` file and commit it to your repository. Now every developer on the team automatically has access to the Lyrics.ovh tools. There's no individual setup required. This fits perfectly into an enterprise workflow where you need to manage tools and integrations centrally. Your team's environment is standardized from the moment they clone the repo.

Setup guide

Set up Lyrics.ovh MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Lyrics.ovh MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Lyrics.ovh tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Lyrics.ovh transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Lyrics.ovh MCP in VS Code Copilot

No, this MCP server is provided by Vinkius and connects to the public Lyrics.ovh API. You just need your standard VS Code and Copilot licenses to use it.
Access is controlled by your Vinkius endpoint token, not the `.vscode/mcp.json` file. Committing the file just tells Copilot that the tool exists; it doesn't expose any credentials, keeping your connection secure.
Absolutely. You can ask the agent to 'write a test case for my function using the lyrics from "Hey Jude" by The Beatles.' Copilot will use `get_lyrics` to fetch the text and generate a relevant test.
It's about standardization and maintenance. This managed MCP server means you don't have to build, host, or secure your own API wrapper. Your team gets a reliable tool that's centrally managed.
Only the data required for the tool call—an artist and song title for `get_lyrics` or a search term for `suggest_songs`—is sent. The server is stateless and has no access to your source code, Git history, or any other proprietary information within VS Code.
