Let Cline inspect n8n execution traces

Your autonomous agent calls `get_execution_details` to read the exact sequence of events that crashed your pipeline. Cline doesn't wait for you to paste logs. It grabs the trace data directly from the n8n API. If a custom script node throws a type error, the agent sees it immediately. It uses `list_workflow_executions` to find the exact run ID, pulls the failure context, and writes the patch in your local repository.

Map out n8n (AI Workflow Automation) dependencies

Before rewriting a backend service, you need to know which automations rely on it. Cline runs `list_workflows` to pull every active process definition. It checks the node configurations to see where your endpoints are being called. It then uses `get_workflow_details` to inspect the payload structures. The agent figures out exactly what data n8n expects. You get accurate mock data and updated interface types without leaving VS Code.

Audit instance security via MCP Server

Keeping track of who built what requires visibility. Cline executes `list_instance_users` to list the collaborators on your server. It cross-references these users against your git commits to see who owns a broken process. It also audits security metadata through `list_stored_credentials`. You can tell the agent to find all outdated OAuth connections. It maps the tags using `list_workflow_tags` and tells you exactly which projects need credential rotation.

Common questions about n8n (AI Workflow Automation) MCP in Cline

Open the Cline sidebar, click the MCP Servers icon, and navigate to the Remote Servers tab. Add the HTTP transport URL, or edit `cline_mcp_settings.json` manually.
The agent can write the code that your webhooks rely on, but it cannot modify the n8n nodes directly. It uses `get_workflow_details` to understand the setup, then patches your local backend files.
If an API call fails, the agent might run `list_stored_credentials` to see if the required authentication block actually exists. It helps diagnose 401 errors happening inside your workflows.
Yes. You can connect it via HTTP transport directly in the VS Code extension. The tools will immediately populate in your MCP sidebar.
The `get_execution_details` tool fetches trace logs, which might contain payload data depending on your node settings. However, the MCP protocol confines this data strictly to your local VS Code environment. Nothing gets broadcasted to external telemetry.
