MCP Server: Structured Data Retrieval

Windsurf can run complex SPARQL queries against Wikidata. It executes the query and returns structured data sets, letting you build reports or reference specific facts directly in your project context. You don't need to write a separate script for this. Just tell Windsurf what information you need—like all statements related to 'Q42'—and it handles the `execute_sparql` call autonomously.

Vector Search Integration

Need to find an entity or property without knowing its ID? Windsurf performs hybrid vector/keyword searches. You can use `search_items_vector` to locate Wikidata Items, or `search_properties_vector` for properties, just by describing what you're looking for. This means your agent doesn't fail if the input is fuzzy. It finds similarity scores and suggests the right data points before you even start coding.

Item Management

When you know exactly what you want to change, Windsurf handles it. You can retrieve an item's current statements using `get_item_statements` and then use `create_statement` if you need to add structured data. Remember that setting any new statement requires OAuth 2.0 access. If you just need a quick reference, `get_item` pulls the core details for a specific Wikidata Item instantly.

Setup guide

Set up Wikidata MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the Wikidata MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Wikidata payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Wikidata tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about Wikidata MCP in Windsurf

To see all statements for any given Wikidata Item, use `get_item_statements`. This function pulls the full structured record set directly into your project. You get the entire picture without manually navigating multiple endpoints.
You can perform searches on both Items and Properties. Use `search_items_vector` for entity names or descriptions, or use `search_properties_vector` if you're looking up a specific characteristic.
Yes. Because Windsurf uses Cascade, it can plan multi-tool sequences. You could ask it to search for an item, retrieve its statements, and then write a summary—all without you prompting each step.
Absolutely. The `create_statement` tool lets your agent add structured data to any Item. Keep in mind that making changes requires an OAuth 2.0 Access Token for security.
This MCP Server touches public, structured data representing the world's open knowledge graph. The specific data type you are manipulating is 'statements' (triples).
