Debating animal classifications with MCP Server

Start by having multiple agents use `get_animals_by_type` to retrieve lists of creatures. The agents then debate which categories are most relevant or how the types overlap. This consensus-driven approach is perfect when the answer isn't obvious, forcing agents to cross-reference data from different animal types.

Fact-checking specific animal records

A security agent can use `get_animal_by_id` to pull a single record and verify its details. Another performance agent then challenges that finding with related context. This negotiation ensures the final decision isn't based on a single, potentially incomplete data point from the MCP Server.

Analyzing random animal sets in debate

You can task multiple agents to use `get_random_animals` and then have them argue over the common characteristics of the resulting group. One might focus on habitat, another on diet. It's a powerful way to force deliberation when analyzing large, unconstrained datasets.

Setup guide

Set up ZooAnimals MCP in AutoGen

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • autogen-ext[mcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install AutoGen with MCP

    Run pip install "autogen-ext[mcp]" autogen-agentchat. The MCP extension includes mcp_server_tools for stateless tool access.

  2. 2

    Fetch tools from the MCP

    Call mcp_server_tools(SseServerParams(url=...)) with your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Run your agent

    Pass the tools to AssistantAgent and call agent.run(). The agent invokes ZooAnimals tools and returns structured results.

agent.py
from autogen_ext.tools.mcp import SseServerParams, mcp_server_tools
from autogen_agentchat.agents import AssistantAgent
from autogen_ext.models.openai import OpenAIChatCompletionClient

server_params = SseServerParams(
    url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)

tools = await mcp_server_tools(server_params)

agent = AssistantAgent(
    name="ZooAnimals_assistant",
    model_client=OpenAIChatCompletionClient(model="gpt-4o"),
    tools=tools,
)

result = await agent.run("List recent ZooAnimals data")
print(result.messages[-1].content)

Common questions about ZooAnimals MCP in AutoGen

You pass the MCP Server tools list directly to your AssistantAgent. The agents then treat the tools as knowledge sources, debating conclusions based on the structured data retrieved from ZooAnimals.
Yes. This is the core feature of AutoGen; agents talk to each other and negotiate which tools—including those in the MCP Server—are necessary to reach a consensus.
One agent might call `get_animals_by_type` first. Another agent takes that result and uses it as context for the next step, which could be calling `get_random_animals`, ensuring continuity.
Yes. The adapter handles schema conversion automatically, allowing you to pass a list of tools from multiple sources and run them in a conversational debate.
This server manages structured animal records, including species names and specific IDs. Since it's read-only retrieval of public zoo data, there are no personal identifiers involved.
