What you can do with this MCP connector

You're connecting your Aconex account to this MCP Server. It lets you handle complex construction and engineering workflows right from your chat client—no need to jump into the browser just to find a name or set up a new site.

Project Listing and Inspection
You can pull a complete list of every project you've got access to using list_projects. You also get the project logo via get_project_logo, which helps you spot what you need at a glance. When you want to know who you are within Aconex, run get_me and it dumps your current user profile right here.

Directory Search (Global & Project)
Need to find someone? You don't have to guess where they are stored. The server lets you search the entire Aconex Global Directory using search_global_directory for any user or organization by criteria. If you know which project the people are in, use search_project_directory to narrow that search down just to that site's directory.

This keeps things tight.

Team and User Management
This is where you run a whole office from your chat window. You can create new users for an organization using create_user, provided you have Admin permissions, or list every current member with list_organization_users. When someone needs access to a project, you send them the invite directly via invite_user_to_project.

If you're done with a user's account, you can change their status using update_user_status, again needing Admin clearance. You also manage communication channels; run create_mailing_group inside a specific project to set up targeted groups for talking only about that site, and if the group is obsolete, use delete_mailing_group to wipe it out.

Project Template Duplication
Setting up a new site shouldn't be torture. Instead of starting from scratch, you can duplicate an existing project using copy_project. This copies the whole thing—the name, the type, all the dates, and every configuration detail—so your new template is ready to go. For document control, you can run get_register_schema on any project; this fetches the structured schema, so you know exactly what kind of documents are supposed to be tracked in that site's register.

It all works because your AI client talks directly to these tools and runs them for you. You just tell it what job needs doing, and it gets the data back.

How Aconex MCP Works

  1. 1 Subscribe to this server and enter your Aconex Hostname and authorization credentials.
  2. 2 Your AI client uses these credentials to authenticate with the Aconex API.
  3. 3 You give a natural language command (e.g., 'Find all users named Smith in Project X'). The agent executes the corresponding tool.

The bottom line is, your AI acts as an automated project administrator, running complex administrative functions based on simple chat commands.

Who Is Aconex MCP For?

This server is for construction and engineering professionals who spend too much time navigating internal web portals. If you're constantly clicking between the global user directory, a project dashboard, and an admin panel to complete basic tasks—you need this. It brings complex backend actions into natural conversation.

Project Manager

Uses list_projects to quickly get an inventory of all active sites, or uses copy_project when they need a new project to mirror the setup of an old one.

Document Controller/Admin

Relies on search_global_directory and list_organization_users to pinpoint exactly which user or organization is responsible for a specific document record.

Operations Lead

Automates team setup by using tools like invite_user_to_project and create_mailing_group, eliminating manual email coordination.

What Changes When You Connect

  • List all projects instantly. Instead of navigating the main Aconex dashboard, just ask to list_projects and get a clean list right here. It saves you three clicks every time you check status.
  • Never lose track of who's on site. Use search_global_directory to find any user by name or organization without leaving your chat. It works whether they are in the Global Directory or just another project.
  • Project setup is fast now. Instead of recreating fields and copying data manually, use copy_project to duplicate a template project instantly. You get full configuration details retained automatically.
  • Onboarding gets simple. To grant access, run search_global_directory first, then immediately follow up with invite_user_to_project. It handles the whole sequence in one conversational turn.
  • Project data is transparent. Running get_register_schema shows you exactly how documents are tracked for a site without opening any tabs or PDFs.

Real-World Use Cases

01

New Site Setup and Templating

A project manager needs to start a new build that requires the exact setup of an old, successful commercial tower. Instead of manually updating names, codes, and dates across multiple forms, they tell their agent: 'Copy the template for Tower 302948.' The agent runs copy_project, giving them a fully configured draft immediately.

02

Finding a Contact in a Massive Organization

A document controller needs to verify if John Smith is part of the 'BuildCorp' organization. They don't know his specific project ID, so they use search_global_directory first. The agent returns all matching users; then, they can follow up by asking the agent to invite him to Project 849201 using invite_user_to_project.

03

Auditing User Access

An operations lead needs to check who is currently active and if a contractor's access should be revoked. They use list_organization_users to get the roster, then use update_user_status to disable an account instantly without logging into the admin panel.

04

Quick Team Communication Setup

A site lead needs to ensure all stakeholders are on the same mailing list for a new phase. They ask the agent to create_mailing_group within Project 849201, naming it 'Phase Two Stakeholders,' and then they can invite specific users to that group.

The Tradeoffs

Manual Directory Lookups

Opening the main Aconex website, clicking through the Global Directory search form, entering filters for name/organization, and then copying a user ID to use somewhere else.

Just ask your agent: 'Search the global directory for users with the family name Smith in BuildCorp.' The tool search_global_directory handles all those clicks for you.

Project Replication via Copy/Paste

Creating a new project and spending hours manually setting up every field—project code, start date, type, etc.—to match an existing template.

Use the copy_project tool. You tell the agent which project to copy from (e.g., 'Tower 302948'), and it handles all the detailed configuration fields automatically.

Sequential User Invites

Finding a user via search, noting their ID, then having to navigate to the project's team list to manually click 'Invite.'

First, use search_global_directory to confirm the user. Then, run invite_user_to_project, referencing both the user and the target project in a single command.

When It Fits, When It Doesn't

Use this server if your job involves frequently moving between different Aconex functions: listing projects, finding people, or setting up new templates. You need to automate administrative tasks that require juggling multiple screens.

Don't use it if you are only performing a single action (e.g., just viewing reports). For pure reporting, the native Aconex interface is fine. If you find yourself repeatedly needing to find users, list projects, or copy templates—that’s when this server pays for itself. If your primary task is only document review without administrative changes, other dedicated document management tools might be a better fit.

Works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and more

The Model Context Protocol standardizes how applications expose capabilities to LLMs. Instead of operating in isolation, your AI gains direct access to external platforms, live data, and real-world actions through secure, standardized connections.

This server provides 13 capabilities that interface natively with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and any MCP client. No middleware. No custom integration required.

Available Capabilities

copy_project create_mailing_group create_user delete_mailing_group get_me get_project_logo get_register_schema invite_user_to_project list_organization_users list_projects search_global_directory search_project_directory update_user_status

Finding the right contact shouldn't take five clicks and an internal search engine.

Right now, if you need to find a user—say, Sarah Smith in BuildCorp—you have to navigate to the Global Directory. You type the name, click filters, maybe check different organizational groupings, and then copy that ID somewhere else just to invite her.

With this MCP server, you simply tell your agent: 'Search the global directory for users with the last name Smith in BuildCorp.' The agent runs `search_global_directory`, finds the two people, and lists them out right here. No clicks needed.

Aconex MCP Server: You get project setup done by talking to your agent.

Used to start a new site template, you'd find an old successful one and then manually copy the name, the code, the type, and maybe change a few dates. It was tedious work that always felt incomplete.

Now, just tell your agent: 'Copy project 302948.' The tool `copy_project` handles every single detail—the structure, the metadata, everything—and gives you an immediate draft. That's how different things are now.

Common Questions About Aconex MCP

Can I use the Aconex MCP Server to list all my projects using `list_projects`? +

Yes, running list_projects returns a comprehensive list of every project your authenticated account has access to. This is useful for quickly getting an inventory or checking which sites are active.

How do I search the directory using `search_global_directory`? +

search_global_directory lets you look up users across the entire Aconex network. You just need to provide criteria like name, organization, or email domain in your prompt.

What's the difference between `search_global_directory` and `search_project_directory`? +

search_global_directory checks everyone everywhere. search_project_directory limits the search scope, finding users only within one specific project you reference.

After I find a user using directory tools, how do I add them to a project? Does it require `invite_user_to_project`? +

Yes, the agent handles this in two steps. First, you search for the user, and then you use invite_user_to_project, linking both the specific user ID and the target project ID.

When I use `copy_project`, what detailed configuration does it carry over? +

It copies the full project setup—including name, code, type, and start date. You don't have to manually re-enter all those details when duplicating a template.

What permissions are required to run admin tools like `list_organization_users`? +

You must hold the Organization Administrator role. If your AI client tries to execute this tool without the correct rights, it will fail immediately, so check your account status first.

How does running `get_project_logo` help verify project details? +

It gets the official logo for a specific project ID. This is helpful when you need to visually confirm which project directory or document set you're working with.

If I want to centralize communication, how do I use `create_mailing_group`? +

You run create_mailing_group, giving it a name and listing the members. This sets up an instant group chat or mailing list right inside your project.
