Ask about air quality in plain English

The AirVisual tools let you ask natural questions about the environment. Just ask Claude, “What’s the air quality index in San Francisco?” and it will use `get_city_data` to pull the latest numbers, including temperature and wind speed. This isn't just for single cities. You can get a survey of a whole area. Try asking, “List all the cities AirVisual tracks in Nevada,” and Claude will use `list_cities` to give you a complete list you can work with for follow-up questions.

Find the nearest data, automatically

You don't always know the name of the nearest monitoring station. You don't have to. The `get_nearest_city_by_ip` tool lets your agent find local data based on your public IP address, so you can just ask, “What’s the AQI like near me?” If you’re working with GPS data, you can feed latitude and longitude directly to `get_nearest_city_by_coords`. Claude gets the location and pulls the relevant air quality report without you needing to find the closest city name yourself.

A simple MCP Server for complex data

This MCP server connects Claude to a global network of air quality sensors. You can get a high-level overview of supported regions with `list_countries` and `list_states` to see the full scope of coverage. When you need to get more specific, `get_station_data` pulls metrics from an individual sensor. It’s a direct way to see what a specific piece of hardware is reporting on the ground, all from your chat window.

Common questions about AirVisual MCP in Claude Desktop

If you're using the desktop app, you can install this MCP server with one click from the Extensions menu. For claude.ai in the browser, you'll paste the Vinkius MCP server URL into the Custom Connectors section in your settings.
Not for a specific street address. The tools work with city names, GPS coordinates, or your IP address to find the nearest monitoring station's data using `get_city_data` or `get_nearest_city_by_coords`.
Yes. On claude.ai, the custom connector functionality works with Free, Pro, and Team plans. You just need the server URL from Vinkius to connect it.
The `get_city_data` tool also provides current weather conditions. This includes temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction for the requested location.
The server processes location data like city names, IP addresses, or GPS coordinates to find the right air quality monitor. Each request you make runs in a separate, ephemeral sandbox on Vinkius. Your data is used only for that single query and is immediately discarded.
