How to Use the ArcGIS MCP in VS Code Copilot
Give your entire engineering team access to ArcGIS spatial analysis inside VS Code Copilot.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect ArcGIS MCP to VS Code Copilot
Create your Vinkius account to connect ArcGIS to VS Code Copilot and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Map drive times with VS Code Copilot
The `calculate_service_area` tool generates precise travel-distance boundaries around any facility specified by a lon,lat pair. You ask your AI client to determine a 10-minute walk zone, and the MCP Server pulls the spatial polygon data straight into your editor. This lets your team validate geographic constraints without leaving their IDE. Complex origin-destination math runs through `calculate_od_matrix`. This operation calculates travel times between multiple starting locations and ending points at once. It returns the raw matrix data so you can build accurate logistics models.
Translate addresses into coordinates globally
The `find_address_candidates` tool takes standard street text and returns accurate latitude and longitude. Searching across borders gets messy, so `find_address_country` restricts the results using a three-letter country code. If you have the coordinates first, `reverse_geocode` finds the nearest physical building or street. High-volume processing relies on `batch_geocode_addresses` to handle up to 1000 records simultaneously via an MCP tool call. Front-end developers building search bars can call `suggest_geocoding` to get partial place names. Adding `suggest_location_bias` forces those suggestions to prioritize nearby locations.
Solve vehicle routing problems via MCP Server
The `solve_vehicle_routing` tool takes an ArcGIS Orders JSON string and returns the most efficient path for a fleet of trucks. Your agent formats the stop details, sends the payload, and retrieves the optimized sequence. You get production-ready logistics data right in your chat window. Basic point-to-point trips use `solve_nav_route`. You feed it a sequence like lon, lat;lon, lat to get detailed turn-by-turn directions. The response includes exact travel times and total distances to help you build better navigation features.
Set up ArcGIS MCP in VS Code Copilot
Prerequisites
- VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
- Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
- 1
Open MCP configuration
Open the Command Palette (
Cmd+Shift+P/Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create.vscode/mcp.jsonin your workspace. - 2
Add the ArcGIS MCP
Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your
.vscode/mcp.json. Replace[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com. - 3
Switch to Agent mode
Open Copilot Chat (
Cmd+Shift+I/Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes. - 4
Verify the connection
In the Copilot Chat input, type
#to list available tools. You should see the ArcGIS tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent ArcGIS transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.
