What you can do with this MCP connector
Listen up. This server connects your AI agent straight into your entire ClickUp setup. You're not just looking at a dashboard; you’ve got full control over everything—tasks, goals, folders, team assignments—all through natural conversation. It ditches the crap where you gotta click through a dozen little tabs and acts across your whole project hierarchy instead.
This is how you run projects now.
Mapping Your Whole Workspace Structure
You can map out every damn corner of your organization using simple queries. To start, it’ll list all the major Workspaces you have access to via list_workspaces. From those, you'll grab a full dump of every Space within them using list_spaces. After that, the agent pulls up all the Folders inside any given Space with list_folders, and from there, it lists every List contained in those folders using list_lists.
You can also check for Lists that aren't nested deep inside a Folder by running list_folderless_lists.
Controlling Tasks: Creation and Modification
Need to drop a new task? Just run the create_task tool. You’ll specify which List you want it in, and you can optionally give it a name, set its status right away, or write a whole description for it. If something changes, don't worry; you won't have to manually update anything.
The agent handles that with update_task. You just tell it what needs changing—maybe the task name, maybe the status, or updating the full description—and it makes it happen. Need to ditch a project entirely? It can delete any specific task from your account using delete_task.
Getting Details and Tracking Progress
You don't just need to know that a task exists; you need all the details on it. The get_task_details tool fetches complete info for any single task, including custom fields and who’s assigned to it. This is crucial for accurate reporting. To see what everyone’s actually working on across an entire List, use list_tasks.
This function pulls a list of multiple tasks from a specific List, even if that List has hundreds of items—it supports pagination so you don't miss a thing.
Managing People and Permissions
The server lets your agent audit team assignments by listing all accessible workspaces, which helps manage collaboration permissions and roles across the board. You’ll get complete data on any task, including the assigned user details, ensuring your project records stay high fidelity.
This setup means you cut down on time. Your AI client acts like an embedded project coordinator that lives inside ClickUp, running commands across all your work areas without you ever having to manually click through a single view.
How ClickUp MCP Works
- 1 Subscribe to the server, then grab your Personal API Token from ClickUp (Settings > Apps).
- 2 Configure your preferred AI client (Claude, Cursor, etc.) with the token and connect it to this MCP Server.
- 3 Ask your agent a question like, 'List all active tasks for the marketing space,' and watch it execute the necessary tools.
The bottom line is you talk to your AI client, and it uses these 10 tools to make changes across ClickUp without you ever opening the web UI.
Who Is ClickUp MCP For?
This is for anyone whose job requires coordinating information across multiple tabs in ClickUp. Think Project Managers who hate manually updating statuses, or Software Teams who need to automate task assignments without leaving their IDE. It’s for the ops engineer tired of clicking through 15 different dashboard views at 2 a.m.
Needs to instantly pull up lists of tasks and update project statuses across multiple related folders using natural language commands.
Manages complex sprint cycles by creating new user stories and assigning them without leaving their coding environment.
Monitors team capacity by listing all accessible workspaces and organizing folder structures using AI queries.
What Changes When You Connect
- Control the Hierarchy: Use
list_workspacesorlist_spacesto map your entire project structure. You don't have to click through five different menus just to find a List ID. - Real-Time Task Updates: Don't manually change statuses. Tell your agent, 'Move task X to Done,' and the server runs
update_task. It handles it instantly. - Deep Data Retrieval: Need to know who owns a feature? Running
get_task_detailspulls all the custom field data you need in one go—no more clicking into 10 different tabs. - Automated Reporting: Use
list_tasksandlist_folderless_liststo pull aggregated progress reports without building complex filtered views yourself. - Full Oversight: Running
list_workspacesor checking team member lists gives you immediate administrative visibility into who's working on what, right from your agent chat.
Real-World Use Cases
The Sprint Status Check
A team lead needs to know the progress of all 'Bug Fixes'. Instead of opening the dedicated Bug Fix folder, going into the Sprint Space, and manually checking three different Lists, they ask their agent. The agent runs list_folderless_lists and then uses list_tasks on each one, returning a summary that highlights tasks needing immediate attention.
Onboarding a New User
An ops analyst needs to grant access to the new 'Product' Space. They use their agent to run list_workspaces first, confirming the correct scope. Then they can list all team members and assign permission updates without ever logging into the settings panel.
Handling a Scope Change
The product manager realizes an entire group of tasks needs to be re-prioritized. Instead of individually opening each task, they ask their agent to run get_task_details on the affected batch, confirming all current metadata before running update_task en masse.
Cleaning Up Old Workflows
A developer needs to delete a deprecated set of tasks. They identify the specific List ID and tell their agent to run delete_task. The task vanishes immediately, maintaining clean records without manual cleanup across multiple views.
The Tradeoffs
Clicking through five levels of folders
You waste 15 minutes clicking: Workspace -> Space -> Folder -> Sub-Folder -> List. You lose your place and forget which task ID you needed.
→
Let the agent run list_workspaces to get context, then ask it to target a specific list using its name or path. It skips all the folder clicking.
Manually copying status updates
Someone changes a task in ClickUp and then has to open Jira, copy the ID, and paste it into a Slack update thread.
→
Use get_task_details via your agent. You pull the full metadata (including custom fields) directly into your chat log, ready to paste or summarize immediately.
Forgetting task dependencies
You update a task's status but forget that other linked tasks depend on it being 'Complete,' causing the project flow to halt.
→
Use list_tasks combined with natural language queries. You can ask your agent to list all high-priority tasks in a specific area, giving you immediate visibility into bottlenecks.
When It Fits, When It Doesn't
Use this server if your job involves constantly moving between different views (Spaces, Folders, Lists) or manually updating the status of multiple items. It excels when coordination is key: listing all workspaces (list_workspaces) and then creating/updating tasks based on that structure.
Don't use it if you only need to read data from a single source or if your task management needs complex dependency mapping (e.g., 'Task A can only start after Task B is finished, AND the budget approval exists'). For those relational models, you might need a specialized graph database tool instead of this list-centric approach. This server provides robust CRUD operations but assumes structure through listing and querying.

Works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and more
The Model Context Protocol standardizes how applications expose capabilities to LLMs. Instead of operating in isolation, your AI gains direct access to external platforms, live data, and real-world actions through secure, standardized connections.
This server provides 10 capabilities that interface natively with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and any MCP client. No middleware. No custom integration required.
Available Capabilities
Jumping between tabs to update task status shouldn't take 10 clicks.
Today, updating a single project item means opening the workspace, navigating through folders to find the correct list, locating the card, clicking on it, changing its status dropdown, and saving. If you have ten tasks that need adjusting, that's 10 cycles of this repetitive click-and-save process.
With this MCP server, you just tell your agent: 'Update all marketing tasks in the Q3 space to 'Needs Review'.' Your AI client runs `update_task` repeatedly across the entire scope, giving you instant confirmation and letting you move on.
The ClickUp MCP Server gives you full control over your project hierarchy.
Before this, seeing what tasks existed in a whole department meant opening the top-level Space, then listing all Folders, and then individually checking every List. It was a slow process of manual enumeration, making it hard to get an accurate view of overall team load.
Now, you run `list_spaces` through your agent. You get the full map immediately. From there, you can drill down using `list_lists` and `list_tasks`, giving you total visibility into who's working on what without touching a single dropdown menu.
Common Questions About ClickUp MCP
How do I list all Workspaces with the ClickUp MCP Server? +
You run the list_workspaces tool. This returns every top-level workspace you have access to, giving you an immediate overview of your entire company structure.
Can I update a task status using the update_task tool? +
Yes. The update_task tool lets you change a task's name, description, or status for any existing item by providing the necessary details.
What is the difference between list_folders and list_lists using this server? +
The list_folders tool shows all containers within a Space. The list_lists tool then goes one level deeper, showing every actual task container nested inside a specific Folder.
