Index Live Procurement Data

Your LlamaIndex agent calls Coupa tools like `list_purchase_orders` or `list_invoices`. Instead of just using the data once, LlamaIndex automatically indexes the results. Now that live data is part of a searchable vector store. This means your agent's knowledge grows with every API call. It builds an understanding of your procurement history, grounded in actual data from Coupa, not just pre-trained information.

Ask Questions, Get Grounded Answers

Once the data is indexed, you can ask natural language questions. 'What was our Q3 spend with Supplier X?' The agent won't guess. It will query its index of past `list_invoices` and `get_purchase_order` calls to give you an answer based on real numbers. This is the core of a good RAG setup. The agent is forced to cite its sources, pulling answers directly from the indexed Coupa data. If the information isn't in the data from tools like `get_supplier_details` or `list_contracts`, the agent can't make it up.

Build a Custom Coupa MCP Server

You can direct your agent to build a specific knowledge base. Have it run `list_suppliers` and `list_contracts` nightly to create an up-to-date index of all your vendor agreements. This MCP Server gives you the tools to populate your index. Your agent can combine this live Coupa data with other documents. Ingest your MSA PDFs alongside the `list_contracts` output. Now you can ask questions that span both structured API data and unstructured documents, all within one LlamaIndex query.

Setup guide

Set up Coupa MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Coupa MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Coupa tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Coupa data")

Common questions about Coupa MCP in LlamaIndex

Install `llama-index-tools-mcp` and instantiate the `McpToolSpec` with your Vinkius client. This gives you a list of tools you can pass directly to a LlamaIndex agent, which will handle calling and indexing.
Yes. The `McpToolSpec` supports an `allowed_tools` filter. You can restrict an agent to only use read-only tools like `list_purchase_orders` and `get_supplier_details`, preventing it from making changes.
The focus is on RAG. LlamaIndex is designed to turn your Coupa API data into a reliable knowledge base your agent can query. This grounds the agent's responses in facts from your own procurement system.
The data is as fresh as your last tool call. You can set up your LlamaIndex application to periodically run tools like `list_invoices` or `list_requisitions` to re-index the latest information from Coupa, keeping your knowledge base current.
Yes. The MCP Server itself is ephemeral and doesn't persist your data. When LlamaIndex calls `list_invoices`, the invoice data is passed to your agent, which then puts it into your chosen vector store. The security of that indexed data depends on how you've configured your own vector database.
