Real-time DOI data in Cursor

Stop using mock data for your research apps. Use `list_dois` to pull live records directly into your editor's agent context. You can write code that reacts to actual API responses. It makes your development cycle faster and more accurate.

Manage research records from Cursor

Create new entries by calling `create_doi` inside your chat. The agent handles the API structure while you focus on your code. This works even for complex updates. You can pass attribute changes to `update_doi` without opening a browser.

Access metadata provenance in Cursor

Run `list_activities` to see how a specific DOI evolved over time. You get the full audit trail inside your editor. It helps you debug issues with record states. You can see why a deletion might fail by checking the current state via the tool output.

Set up DataCite REST MCP in Cursor

Prerequisites

  • Cursor installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP Settings

Go to Cursor Settings → MCP or open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and search for "MCP: Add Server".

  2. 2

    Add the DataCite REST MCP

Cursor will create or open .cursor/mcp.json in your project root. Paste the JSON snippet on the right. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Enable Agent mode

Open Composer (Cmd+I / Ctrl+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown at the top. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

Ask Cursor something like "List my recent DataCite REST transactions." If the MCP tools are loaded correctly, Cursor will call the DataCite REST tools automatically. You can also check Settings → MCP for a green status indicator.

Common questions about DataCite REST MCP in Cursor

Create a .cursor/mcp.json file in your project. Define the server settings there, and the tools will show up in Agent mode.
Only for DOIs in the Draft state. You use the `delete_doi` tool to remove them, provided you have the correct API permissions.
You can call `list_prefixes` to see all available DOI prefixes. This is useful when you need to validate your identifiers before creation.
Tokens are stored in your local configuration files. Cursor loads them only when the agent needs to authenticate with the registry.
The server transmits your DOI metadata over TLS. Your records are never logged or stored by the Vinkius infrastructure.
