Build with Live Government Data
The `search_datasets` tool gives Cline direct API access to the entire Data.gov catalog. You can tell it to find specific data, and it will get a structured JSON response to work with. This isn't just about finding data; it's about building with it. Tell Cline: "Create a Python script that pulls all new datasets from the Department of Commerce and saves them to a CSV." Cline will use the tools, write the code, and create the file.
From Location Name to GeoJSON
The `search_locations` tool lets Cline find geographic boundaries for states or counties. It autocompletes location names and returns a standard GeoJSON object. Give Cline a task like "build a Leaflet map component showing the outline of Colorado." It will use `get_location_geometry` to fetch the GeoJSON, then write the React or Vue component with the map data already included.
Your Agent's Data.gov Toolkit
This MCP Server exposes core Data.gov functions directly to your agent. Use `get_organizations` to list every government entity that publishes data, or `get_keywords` to see what topics are trending. Cline uses these tools to execute complex requests. For example, you can ask it to "write a test that confirms the top 5 agencies are still publishing data." Cline will use `get_organizations` and `search_datasets` to write and run that test for you.
