Inspect guild members and channels

The `list_guild_members` tool lets your editor pull the entire roster of any Discord server you manage. You don't have to open the Discord desktop app to check who is who when a user complains or needs a role update. Combined with `get_user` and `list_channels` in VS Code Copilot, this gives you the ability to map out server structures instantly. It reads the raw JSON data straight from the Discord API so you can debug permissions or audit user lists without leaving your editor.

Send and read chat logs through this MCP Server

The `list_messages` tool fetches recent chat history from any specific text channel directly into your editor panel. This means your agent can watch for error reports or system logs sent to your Discord alerts channel while you write code. You can also use `send_message` to dispatch quick updates or automated test alerts to your team. Instead of context switching to paste a log snippet, you just tell VS Code Copilot to drop the output into your engineering channel.

Automate direct reach-outs and server mapping

The `create_dm_channel` tool opens a direct line to any user on your server by returning their specific DM channel ID. This lets your agent coordinate private notifications or onboarding steps behind the scenes. Running `list_guilds` and `get_guild` lets you verify which Discord servers your bot is currently active in. This MCP setup makes server discovery simple.

Setup guide

Set up Discord MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Discord MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Discord tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Discord transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Discord MCP in VS Code Copilot

You just add the server configuration to your `.vscode/mcp.json` file in your project root or your global user settings. Once added, VS Code Copilot automatically detects the tools and lets you interact with your Discord channels in Agent mode.
Yes, but only if your bot token has the required permissions and intents enabled in the Discord Developer Portal. The `list_channels` and `list_messages` tools respect whatever access levels you granted to your bot.
First, your agent calls `create_dm_channel` with the target user's ID to open the channel. After that, it uses `send_message` with the resulting DM channel ID to deliver the message.
You can use it to monitor activity via `list_messages` and warn users with `send_message`. However, this toolset does not include ban or kick actions, so you will need to handle actual bans manually or through another system.
Your Discord bot tokens, message logs, and member lists never touch third-party databases. Vinkius runs the integration inside isolated, ephemeral sandboxes that discard all memory as soon as your session ends.
