Share search diagnostic tools across your engineering team

The `search` tool and `list_engines` tool allow your team to run diagnostic queries directly within VS Code Copilot. By checking in a shared configuration file, every developer on your team gets instant access to your Elastic engines. When debugging a search bug, any developer can ask Copilot to run a query and inspect the raw payload. This shared access eliminates the need to distribute separate Postman collections or share admin passwords.

Validate schema migrations using this team-wide MCP Server

The `get_engine` tool and `index_documents` tool let your team test schema migrations directly inside VS Code Copilot. This MCP server inspects the active engine schema and attempts to index test records to verify compatibility. This prevents broken schemas from reaching your staging environments. The agent catches type mismatches in your JSON payloads before you commit the ingestion code to your repository.

Analyze production search queries in your workspace

The `analytics` tool and `list_documents` tool bring real user search telemetry directly into VS Code Copilot. Your developers can query the analytics endpoint to inspect search trends and click behaviors without leaving their coding environment. This telemetry helps your team prioritize search optimization tasks. If the analytics show a spike in queries with no results, Copilot can instantly locate the search controller in your codebase and suggest synonym mappings.

Setup guide

Set up Elastic Enterprise Search MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

Add the Elastic Enterprise Search MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Elastic Enterprise Search tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Elastic Enterprise Search transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Elastic Enterprise Search MCP in VS Code Copilot

You commit an `.vscode/mcp.json` file containing the server configuration to your Git repository. Once committed, VS Code Copilot automatically loads the tools for every developer on the project.
Yes, you can instruct Copilot to index multiple JSON files from your codebase. It processes these files and uses the `index_documents` tool to upload the records to your Elastic engine.
You open the Copilot Chat panel in VS Code and check the active tools list. If configured correctly in your settings, the search, indexing, and analytics tools will be visible and ready for your agent to call.
The `list_documents` tool returns a paginated list of indexed documents. Your agent automatically manages the pagination parameters to prevent overloading the VS Code Copilot chat context.
Your search analytics data is retrieved directly from your Elastic instance via HTTPS and rendered straight into your local editor. No analytical payloads or query logs are cached or stored by Vinkius, maintaining strict compliance with your team's security standards.
