Cursor-integrated device automation

Inject live hardware control into your coding sessions. Your agent uses `fan_action` or `alarm_action` to test your automation scripts against real gear. Stop mocking your API responses. This MCP server lets you run tests against actual devices while you write the code in your editor.

Hardware metrics in your editor

Gather live telemetry with `get_metrics` to debug your logic as it runs. You get the raw data you need to fix your code immediately. Seeing the metrics inside your editor changes how you write logic for your sensors. You'll spot bugs in your threshold math before you even deploy.

Direct hardware state modification

Trigger `button_press` or `cover_action` directly from your chat sidebar. It's the most efficient way to verify your code's impact on your physical space. Your agent executes the action and reports back the result. You stay in the flow, coding and testing without switching contexts.

Setup guide

Set up ESPHome MCP in Cursor

Prerequisites

  • Cursor installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP Settings

Go to Cursor Settings → MCP or open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and search for "MCP: Add Server".

  2. 2

    Add the ESPHome MCP

Cursor will create or open .cursor/mcp.json in your project root. Paste the JSON snippet on the right. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Enable Agent mode

Open Composer (Cmd+I / Ctrl+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown at the top. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

Ask Cursor something like "List my recent ESPHome transactions." If the MCP tools are loaded correctly, Cursor will call the ESPHome tools automatically. You can also check Settings → MCP for a green status indicator.

Common questions about ESPHome MCP in Cursor

Create a `.cursor/mcp.json` file in your workspace root. Point it to your server configuration, and your agent will pick up the tools automatically.
It needs network access to reach your ESPHome device's HTTP port. Make sure your local firewall isn't blocking the connection.
Absolutely. Once the server is configured, the agent sees the tools in its available toolset and can call them based on your prompts.
The server doesn't store credentials or history. It only performs the actions you explicitly command through the agent.
Only if you spam the tools. Keep your polling intervals reasonable, and the ESPHome device will handle the requests just fine.
