Build a Self-Auditing Agent

Give your agent the job of checking your books. It can pull a summary with `get_profit_and_loss` and then dig into the details by calling `list_bank_transactions` for specific accounts. This isn't just about getting data; it's about building a process. The OpenAI Agents SDK lets you define guardrails. Before your agent acts on a discrepancy, it can be forced to ask for human approval. You get a full trace of its reasoning in the OpenAI dashboard, so you always know what happened and why.

Automate Project Costing

Track project profitability without lifting a finger. An agent can use `list_projects` to get a list of active work, then cross-reference it with expenses pulled from `list_out_of_pocket_expenses` and bills from `list_purchase_bills`. It can spot overruns before they become a problem. You can even build a team of agents. One agent could be specialized in expense analysis, another in invoicing. The SDK's handoff features let them collaborate, passing context and findings to one another to solve more complex financial questions.

Connect Your Financial MCP Server

This FreeAgent MCP Server exposes your accounting data through a standard protocol. Your agent doesn't need to know the specifics of the FreeAgent API, just how to use the tools provided. It can check company info with `get_company_details` or pull customer data with `get_contact_details` using the same logic. Setting it up is straightforward. You pass the Vinkius server URL to the `MCPServerStreamableHttp` constructor and add it to your agent. The tools are discovered automatically, so your agent is ready to connect to your financial data right away.

Setup guide

Set up FreeAgent MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all FreeAgent tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives FreeAgent tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate FreeAgent tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="FreeAgent Agent",
            instructions="You have access to FreeAgent tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about FreeAgent MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

First, subscribe to this server on Vinkius to get your endpoint token. Then, in your Python code, instantiate `MCPServerStreamableHttp` with that URL and pass it to your Agent's constructor. The SDK handles tool discovery from there.
No, the tools provided by this server are for reading data only. Your agent can `list_invoices` and `get_invoice_details`, but it cannot create or modify records in your FreeAgent account.
The MCP server will return an error, which the SDK surfaces as an exception in your code. You should build standard error handling logic—like retries with backoff or logging the failure—into your agent's operation.
You control the toolset at the agent level. While the server exposes all its tools, you can configure your agent in the OpenAI platform or SDK to only have access to a specific subset, like only allowing it to `get_profit_and_loss`.
This server processes your FreeAgent financial data, including contacts, invoices, and bank transaction lists. The server itself runs in a Vinkius zero-trust sandbox that is destroyed after use. Access is controlled by your private endpoint token, and the OpenAI Agents SDK provides a full trace of every tool call for your own auditing.
