Cascade Runs Multi-Step Honeycomb Diagnostics

`run_query` is the core tool Windsurf uses to run raw query specs against your telemetry data. Cascade chains this with `list_datasets` to find your target service slug and then builds the query payload automatically. You just point Cascade at a spike in your error rate, and it goes to work. Once Cascade gets the query ID, it polls `get_query_result` behind the scenes to fetch the raw JSON output. It maps columns using `list_dataset_columns` to verify fields, saving you from digging through the UI while your system is burning down.

Automated Timeline Annotation in Windsurf

`create_marker` lets Windsurf drop an annotation directly onto your Honeycomb dataset timeline during a deployment or incident. Cascade reads your workspace state, identifies the exact commit or incident trigger, and formats the marker payload with the required message. The agent uses `list_markers` to check existing annotations before writing a new one. This prevents duplicate markers when Cascade runs automated canary deployments or rollback scripts in your workspace.

Board and Trigger Discovery via Honeycomb MCP Server

`list_honeycomb_boards` pulls down your team's shared dashboards so Windsurf can locate query specs via the MCP server. It extracts the raw query definitions using `list_queries` to understand what your team usually monitors. It also checks `list_triggers` to see which alerts are currently configured for your datasets. This lets Cascade cross-reference live metric spikes with active alert thresholds directly inside the Windsurf chat.

Setup guide

Set up Honeycomb MCP in Windsurf

Prerequisites

  • Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  2. 2

    Add the Honeycomb MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the mcpServers object. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Refresh MCPs

Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.

  4. 4

    Verify in Cascade

Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my Honeycomb payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the Honeycomb tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.

Common questions about Honeycomb MCP in Windsurf

Cascade takes your high-level prompt, calls `list_datasets` to find the target slug, and generates the query JSON. It then runs `run_query` and polls `get_query_result` until it has the data to explain the spike.
Yes. You can configure Windsurf to require manual approval before Cascade executes `create_marker`. This keeps your production timelines clean from accidental automated annotations.
Cascade first calls `list_dataset_columns` to pull the schema. Because the Vinkius MCP server runs in a secure sandbox, Windsurf handles the payload limits by filtering columns before building the query specification.
Yes, Cascade uses `list_honeycomb_boards` and `get_team_details` to fetch shared dashboards. It parses the queries on those boards to quickly pull up the same graphs you use in the UI.
Your Honeycomb query results and dataset schemas never touch external servers. Vinkius hosts this MCP server in an isolated, zero-trust sandbox, passing query JSON directly to the Honeycomb API using your endpoint token.
