Ingest KnowledgeOwl via MCP

The `list_kb_articles` tool feeds your entire help center directly into a LlamaIndex vector store. Your script grabs the list, pulls the text with `get_article_content`, and chunks it for semantic search. Users get answers grounded in actual documentation instead of hallucinations. You build a RAG pipeline that treats your live help center as a primary, queryable knowledge base.

Map categories and terms

You can index the exact terminology your company uses by calling the `list_kb_glossary` tool. The agent embeds these definitions alongside your main content to improve query accuracy. Structural context matters for RAG. By running `list_kb_categories` and `get_category_details`, your application understands how articles relate to each other. This helps the index route complex user questions to the right subset of documents.

Query the LlamaIndex MCP Server

Sometimes you need live results that have not hit the vector store yet, which is where the `search_help_center` tool comes in. Your FunctionAgent can query the live API directly if the semantic search returns low confidence scores. This hybrid approach guarantees users always see the latest edits. The agent checks `get_kb_project_info` to verify the project status, then decides whether to trust the local index or pull fresh data.

Setup guide

Set up KnowledgeOwl MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all KnowledgeOwl MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to KnowledgeOwl tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent KnowledgeOwl data")

Common questions about KnowledgeOwl MCP in LlamaIndex

Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp. Use BasicMCPClient to establish the connection, then wrap it with McpToolSpec and call await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async().
Yes. You use the list_kb_articles and get_article_content tools to pull documents into your script. From there, LlamaIndex chunks and embeds the text into your vector store.
The server provides raw API access to your text. LlamaIndex handles the actual embedding and semantic indexing locally on your machine.
Pass an allowed_tools list to the FunctionAgent. You might only want it using search_help_center instead of listing your entire category structure.
The server retrieves your KB articles, custom fields, and project settings over an encrypted connection. You control exactly which LLM processes that text and where the resulting embeddings are stored.
