How to Use the LA Metro MCP in Windsurf
Give Windsurf real-time access to LA Metro transit data so Cascade can build and test route-tracking apps without asking for permission.
Works with every AI agent you already use
…and any MCP-compatible client
Connect LA Metro MCP to Windsurf
Create your Vinkius account to connect LA Metro to Windsurf and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.
Real-time bus and rail tracking
The LA Metro MCP Server feeds live transit coordinates straight into Windsurf. You tell Cascade to build a live map of the 720 Rapid line, and it hits `get_bus_locations` and `get_bus_vehicles` to plot actual GPS data. Cascade also pulls `get_rail_vehicle_positions` to add train data on the same map. You get a working prototype tracking Red Line trains and local buses before you even finish your coffee.
Schedule versus reality analysis (Windsurf MCP Server)
Transit apps die when they trust scheduled times over reality. Cascade prevents this by pulling `get_bus_schedule` and comparing it against `get_stop_predictions` to calculate actual delays. If a bus is running late, Windsurf writes the back-off logic automatically. LA traffic ignores timetables anyway. Your agent wires up `get_service_alerts` to display active detours right in your UI components.
Full-trip rail routing
Building a routing engine from scratch is a massive headache. You can just ask Windsurf to map a commute from North Hollywood to Santa Monica, and it queries `get_rail_to_rail` for the exact station sequence. Cascade then maps the transfer points using `get_rail_stations` and pulls the next train times via `get_rail_arrivals`. It writes the entire data fetching layer and renders the results in your terminal while you watch.
Set up LA Metro MCP in Windsurf
Prerequisites
- Windsurf IDE installed (macOS, Windows, or Linux)
- Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
- 1
Open MCP configuration
Click the Cascade assistant icon in the sidebar, then click the hammer icon (🔨) at the top of the panel. Select "Configure" to open
~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. - 2
Add the LA Metro MCP
Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into the
mcpServersobject. Replace[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com. - 3
Refresh MCPs
Go back to the hammer icon (🔨) in Cascade and click "Refresh". Windsurf will detect the new server. No full restart is needed — the connection is hot-reloaded.
- 4
Verify in Cascade
Start a new Cascade conversation and ask something like "Show my LA Metro payment history." If connected, Cascade will call the LA Metro tools directly. You will see a green dot next to the server name in the MCP panel.
