Chain issue discovery with instant updates

Your LangChain agents can search active sprint backlogs using `list_linear_issues` and instantly flag blockers. Instead of waiting for manual updates, the output of your query feeds directly into the next chain link to modify tickets. The agent uses `update_linear_issue` to reassign tasks or adjust priorities on the fly. Because every step is traced in LangSmith, you can see exactly how the agent decided to change the ticket status.

Automate LangChain coordination pipelines

You can construct LangChain pipelines that check who is on what team before dumping new work on them. This MCP Server lets you run `list_linear_teams` and `list_linear_users` to map out current workloads. Once the pipeline finds the right owner, it runs `create_linear_issue` to assign the ticket. This keeps your team from getting spammed with issues they don't own.

Thread context into active projects

Keep your project tracking clean by connecting conversational context directly to tickets. The chain takes Slack summaries or git logs and calls `create_linear_comment` on the target issue. By using `get_linear_issue` first, the agent confirms the issue exists and has the correct label before posting. You get clean, contextual updates without leaving your development environment.

Setup guide

Set up Linear MCP in LangChain

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • langchain-mcp-adapters + langgraph packages
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install langchain-mcp-adapters langgraph langchain-openai. The MCP adapters package converts MCP tools into native LangChain BaseTool objects.

  2. 2

    Connect via HTTP transport

    Use MultiServerMCPClient with "transport": "http" pointing to your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Create a ReAct agent

    Pass the discovered tools to create_react_agent() from LangGraph. The agent automatically routes Linear tool calls through the MCP protocol.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Swap ChatOpenAI for ChatAnthropic, ChatGoogleGenerativeAI, or any LangChain-compatible model. The MCP tools work identically across all providers.

agent.py
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
from langgraph.prebuilt import create_react_agent
from langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI

async with MultiServerMCPClient({
    "linear-alternative-mcp": {
        "transport": "http",
        "url": "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp",
    }
}) as client:
    tools = client.get_tools()

    agent = create_react_agent(
        ChatOpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
        tools,
    )
    result = await agent.ainvoke({
        "messages": "List recent Linear transactions"
    })
    print(result["messages"][-1].content)

Common questions about Linear MCP in LangChain

You pass your endpoint token directly into the MultiServerMCPClient configuration during setup. This single token handles authorization for all 11 tools, meaning your LangChain chains run securely without managing raw Linear API keys.
Yes, by passing the tools to your agent executor, LangChain evaluates the user prompt and determines if it needs to run `create_linear_issue`. The agent will check the current workspace context first to avoid creating duplicates.
The `list_linear_issues` tool returns structured JSON payloads that your LangChain chains can easily parse or filter. You can limit the payload size in your prompt to keep token usage low and prevent context window overflow.
Use LangSmith to trace the exact inputs and outputs of tools like `update_linear_issue`. You will see the precise payload sent to this server and the exact error returned if a field is invalid.
Your issue titles, descriptions, and user comments are processed inside an isolated V8 sandbox on Vinkius. No issue data is ever stored on our servers or used to train models.
