Team-wide geocoding tools in VS Code Copilot

This server lets VS Code Copilot use the `search_geocode` tool to resolve addresses directly inside your active workspace. By adding this MCP Server to your workspace configuration, your team can call `reverse_geocode` to turn coordinates into physical locations during code reviews or pair programming. This ensures everyone on the engineering team is testing against the same spatial data. No more 'it works on my machine' issues when dealing with complex location-based services.

Generate routing logic with real distance matrices

Your team can instruct VS Code Copilot to call `calculate_distance_matrix` to generate realistic travel durations for your test cases. It can also invoke `calculate_directions` to write and verify routing paths between coordinates directly in your workspace. Because these MCP tools run locally through your shared workspace configuration, Copilot can write accurate integration tests that use real API responses instead of static mocks.

Clean up spatial data inside your workspace

Your workspace uses the `snap_nearest_roads` tool to clean up noisy GPS data inside your active editor files. It can also translate international addresses using `reverse_language_bias` to make sure your database records are formatted correctly. You can also keep an eye on your API usage by letting Copilot check your remaining queries with `check_account_balance`. It keeps your development workflow fast and keeps your team from accidentally exhausting your API limits.

Setup guide

Set up LocationIQ (Geocoding & Maps) MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

Add the LocationIQ (Geocoding & Maps) MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the LocationIQ (Geocoding & Maps) tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent LocationIQ (Geocoding & Maps) transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about LocationIQ (Geocoding & Maps) MCP in VS Code Copilot

Create a .vscode/mcp.json file in your project root and commit it to Git. Once your team members open the workspace in VS Code 1.96+, Copilot will automatically detect the MCP server and allow them to use tools like `search_geocode` and `calculate_directions`.
Yes, Copilot can call `search_autocomplete` to pull suggested address lists for partial queries. This helps you write and test autocomplete UI components with real data directly from your editor.
Your team can instruct Copilot to use `search_country_filter` during code generation. This forces all geocoding queries to stay within specific country boundaries, preventing foreign address matches from breaking your local tests.
Yes, the `search_bounding_box` tool lets Copilot restrict searches to a specific geographic rectangle. This is useful for writing tests that are highly localized to a single city or region.
Your team's address queries and coordinate lookups are protected because your API key is injected as a local environment variable. All queries from this MCP integration are sent directly to LocationIQ over TLS, keeping your data from being leaked to third parties.
