Indexing Meetup event data for LlamaIndex RAG

Stop guessing what your local community is doing. This integration lets your LlamaIndex pipeline pull live schedules using `list_upcoming_events` and feed them directly into your vector index. Your agent can then answer user queries about upcoming tech talks with zero hallucinations. By loading raw text from `get_event` directly into your document store, you build a searchable knowledge base of past and future meetups. The agent queries this index to find patterns in topics, venues, and scheduling.

Semantic search across Meetup groups in LlamaIndex

Use `search_groups` to gather data on local organizations, then index their descriptions using LlamaIndex's embedding models. This allows your agent to perform semantic searches, matching users to groups based on their interests rather than exact keyword matches. The MCP Server tools act as live data loaders. Instead of static files, your index stays fresh by querying the API whenever your application needs to refresh its knowledge of local communities.

Analyzing member directories with MCP tools

Feed member rosters from `list_group_members` straight into your index to map community engagement. Your LlamaIndex agent can cross-reference this data with `get_me` to identify which active organizers are driving the most participation. This setup turns raw API payloads into structured nodes. You can query your member database using natural language, asking your agent to find active organizers without writing complex database queries.

Setup guide

Set up Meetup MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Meetup MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Meetup tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Meetup data")

Common questions about Meetup MCP in LlamaIndex

Use the `llama-index-tools-mcp` package to initialize the client. Then, wrap it with `McpToolSpec` and call `to_tool_list_async()` to pass `search_groups` and other tools to your LlamaIndex agent.
Yes, you can. By pulling event descriptions with `get_event` and indexing them into a vector store, LlamaIndex allows your users to search for meetups using natural language queries.
The agent evaluates the user's query against the tool definitions. If a user asks for active tech groups, the agent calls `search_groups` to fetch fresh live data instead of relying on outdated index files.
Absolutely. You can fetch member rosters using `list_group_members` and parse them into LlamaIndex index nodes. This lets you run queries to identify top contributors or track growth trends over time.
All fetched data, including Meetup member names and profile details, is processed locally within your application's memory before indexing. The sandbox ensures your API tokens and private member lists never leak to external vector databases or public models.
