Turn Your Nextcloud Into a Knowledge Base

Use LlamaIndex to do more than just call tools. Point it at this MCP Server to index the output of every operation. Your agent can run `list_files` and `list_shares` to map out your entire file structure and all its permissions. Once indexed, this data becomes a queryable knowledge base. You can ask complex questions in natural language, and the agent will answer based on the actual state of your Nextcloud instance, not a guess. It grounds the agent in reality.

Query File and User Configurations

This is how you build a true question-answering system for your own data. An agent can periodically run `list_activities` and index the results, giving you a searchable history of all file changes, shares, and comments. Imagine asking, "Who was the last person to modify the 'Q4_Strategy.docx' file?" or "Show me all public links created last week." LlamaIndex can answer by querying the indexed output of tools like `list_activities` and `list_shares`.

Combine Live Data with Indexed Knowledge

LlamaIndex agents can decide when to query their index versus when to call a live tool. If a user asks about a specific share, the agent might first check its index. If the data is stale, it can then call `list_shares` directly to get the latest information. This hybrid approach gives you speed and accuracy. The agent uses its indexed knowledge for fast lookups and tools like `get_user_status` or `get_capabilities` for real-time data that must be fresh.

Setup guide

Set up Nextcloud MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Nextcloud MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Nextcloud tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Nextcloud data")

Common questions about Nextcloud MCP in LlamaIndex

LlamaIndex doesn't query Nextcloud directly. You configure an agent to periodically call tools like `list_files` and `list_shares`, and LlamaIndex stores that output in a vector index. Your queries then run against that local, indexed data.
Yes. While LlamaIndex is known for RAG, its agents can also execute actions. You can build an agent that finds a file in its index and then calls `delete_file` or `update_share` on the live server.
Anything based on the data you've indexed. You can ask about file permissions, share links, user activity, and folder structures. For example, "List all shares owned by 'admin' in my Nextcloud instance" is a perfect query.
No, it's straightforward. You use the `McpToolSpec` to wrap the client, which exposes all 16 Nextcloud tools to your LlamaIndex agent. The agent can then use them for both indexing and direct actions.
Your agent processes Nextcloud file metadata, share configurations, and user activity logs. The Vinkius MCP Server itself is stateless, but LlamaIndex will store the *output* of these tools in your vector store. You are in control of that index and where it's stored.
