Automate geocoding tasks in Cline

Cline acts as your engine for location data. When you need to turn a list of addresses into lat/lon coordinates, the agent calls `search` repeatedly to build your dataset. It handles the file creation and data formatting for you. You just watch as the agent writes the output directly into your project directory.

Perform reverse lookups on demand

If you have coordinate arrays in your code, point Cline at them. It uses `reverse_geocode` to populate your variables with accurate city and country information. This saves you from manual verification. The agent verifies the output against the OSM schema and confirms the result is ready for your application logic.

Inspect OSM object hierarchies

Use `get_details` to extract deep metadata from OpenStreetMap. Cline can fetch parent place hierarchies and Wikipedia links to enrich your application data. This is a huge time-saver for building location-aware apps. You get the structured data returned as a JSON object, which Cline can then use to generate your code.

Common questions about Nominatim MCP in Cline

Open the MCP settings in your Cline sidebar and add the server. Once connected, prompt Cline to search for a location, and it will trigger the `search` tool.
Yes, just provide coordinates to Cline. It will recognize the need for location resolution and call the `reverse_geocode` tool to get the address.
You provide an OSM ID, and Cline uses `lookup_osm` to fetch the display name and coordinates. It then presents this data to you or incorporates it into your codebase.
The server only processes public map data and coordinates. It has no access to your local environment variables or private repository secrets.
The MCP server operates as a stateless bridge. It does not track your specific queries or store your session history on any backend server.
