Connect Recurly MCP to OpenAI Agents SDK

Create your Vinkius account to connect Recurly to OpenAI Agents SDK and route execution through our secure gateway. The platform manages server hosting, runtime updates, and security layers. Configuration requires no manual server provisioning.

Key Capabilities

Validate subscription changes before execution

Your OpenAI Agents SDK setup can pull Recurly data safely because of built-in guardrails. When your agent calls `get_subscription_details` or `list_subscriptions`, you can intercept the payload to verify the agent isn't acting on hallucinated plans. It prevents accidental plan changes or billing errors before they hit your live production gateway. If a user asks to downgrade, one agent can fetch active rates using `list_subscription_plans` while another handles the actual account update. You can trace this entire handoff on your OpenAI developer dashboard to see exactly how the parameters were passed.

Automate billing triage with an MCP Server

Let your customer support agents handle invoice disputes autonomously. By connecting this MCP Server to your OpenAI Agents SDK configuration, the agent can run `get_invoice` and `list_transactions` to figure out why a charge failed. It gets the raw transaction history directly from Recurly without needing a human to open the billing dashboard. You do not need to write custom API wrappers for every billing edge case. Just pass the server in your agent constructor, and the model maps user messages to `get_account_details` or `list_billing_invoices` on the fly.

Guarded coupon application

Applying discounts to accounts is risky if an agent goes rogue. By using the OpenAI Agents SDK framework, you can restrict coupon management tools like `list_coupons` to specific specialized agents. This keeps your billing logic separated from general conversational tasks. When a customer asks for a discount, the conversational agent hands off the task to a billing-specific agent. That agent checks active promotions, matches them against the user account, and registers the account status using `create_billing_account` if they are a new sign-up.

Setup guide

Set up Recurly MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • openai-agents package (pip install openai-agents)
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install the SDK

    Run pip install openai-agents to install the OpenAI Agents SDK. The MCP integration is built-in — no extra dependencies needed.

  2. 2

    Connect via SSE transport

    Use MCPServerSse with your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. The SDK auto-discovers all Recurly tools at runtime.

  3. 3

    Create your Agent

    Pass the MCP to Agent(mcp_servers=[server]). The agent receives Recurly tools as native definitions — JSON schemas resolve automatically.

  4. 4

    Run the agent

    Call Runner.run(agent, prompt) to execute. The agent invokes the appropriate Recurly tools and returns structured results. Copy the full example on the right to get started.

agent.py
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
from agents.mcp import MCPServerSse

async def main():
    async with MCPServerSse(
        url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
    ) as server:
        agent = Agent(
            name="Recurly Agent",
            instructions="You have access to Recurly tools.",
            mcp_servers=[server],
        )
        result = await Runner.run(agent, "List recent transactions")
        print(result.final_output)

asyncio.run(main())

Common questions about Recurly MCP in OpenAI Agents SDK

Install the package via pip and initialize the server streamable HTTP params with your Vinkius endpoint. Pass the server instance directly into your Agent constructor's mcp_servers list. The SDK automatically registers all eleven tools at runtime.
Yes, you can control tool access at the SDK level by defining agent boundaries or using specialized handoffs. For instance, you can create a read-only agent that only has access to `list_subscriptions` and `get_invoice`, while keeping write tools restricted.
It does. Setting cacheToolsList to true prevents your system from fetching the tool definitions on every single request. This keeps your agent responses fast when querying `list_subscription_plans` or `list_billing_accounts`.
Use the OpenAI developer dashboard to trace the exact tool inputs and outputs. If a call to `create_billing_account` fails because of a duplicate email, you will see the raw API error response in your run traces.
Your subscription keys and customer details never pass through public networks unencrypted. Vinkius runs the MCP Server in an isolated V8 sandbox, meaning your API tokens are secure while the agent pulls raw JSON payloads.
