Key Capabilities

Building a Knowledge Index from Shipping Data

LlamaIndex can ingest the output of `list_purchased_labels` and store it in a vector database. This means you don't just get a list; you create semantic knowledge about past transactions. You can then query your index to answer questions like, 'What was the typical cost for shipments to zip code 90210 last quarter?' This capability is massive for RAG applications. Instead of calling `list_recent_shipments` and getting raw JSON, you build a searchable knowledge base that answers complex business queries using the underlying API data.

Validating Addresses and Rates in Search

The system uses `create_and_validate_address` to validate inputs, adding this structured data point to your index. When combined with rate data from `create_shipment_get_rates`, you build a searchable record of 'valid addresses paired with optimal rates.' This allows developers building LlamaIndex applications to query for feasibility: 'What is the cheapest way to ship an item of these dimensions to this specific address?' The output becomes part of your long-term, retrievable knowledge base.

Tracking and Customs Compliance in RAG

You can index the results from `track_package_status` alongside customs declarations. This creates a historical record that links package movement to compliance status. For example, you could search your knowledge base for: 'Which shipments were delayed because of missing customs information?' The tools like `list_customs_declarations` and `list_customs_items` feed this index. LlamaIndex treats the API data as searchable facts, letting users ask questions that require synthesizing multiple pieces of metadata.

Setup guide

Set up Shippo MCP in LlamaIndex

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • llama-index-tools-mcp package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install dependencies

    Run pip install llama-index-tools-mcp llama-index-llms-openai. The MCP tools package provides BasicMCPClient and McpToolSpec.

  2. 2

    Connect with BasicMCPClient

    Point BasicMCPClient to your Vinkius endpoint URL. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com. Supports SSE and Streamable HTTP transports.

  3. 3

    Convert to LlamaIndex tools

    Call mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async() to convert all Shippo MCP tools into native FunctionTool objects that any LlamaIndex agent can use.

  4. 4

    Run with any LLM

    Create a FunctionAgent with the tools and your preferred LLM. Swap OpenAI for Anthropic, Gemini, or any LlamaIndex-supported provider.

agent.py
from llama_index.tools.mcp import BasicMCPClient, McpToolSpec
from llama_index.core.agent.workflow import FunctionAgent
from llama_index.llms.openai import OpenAI

# Connect to the MCP
mcp_client = BasicMCPClient(
    "https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)
mcp_tool_spec = McpToolSpec(client=mcp_client)

# Convert MCP tools to LlamaIndex tools
tools = await mcp_tool_spec.to_tool_list_async()

# Create and run the agent
agent = FunctionAgent(
    tools=tools,
    llm=OpenAI(model="gpt-4o"),
    system_prompt="You have access to Shippo tools.",
)
response = await agent.run("List recent Shippo data")

Common questions about Shippo MCP in LlamaIndex

By running `create_shipment_get_rates` and indexing the results, LlamaIndex stores not just the rates, but the context (dimensions, zones) that led to them. You can then query for cost trends over time.
Yes. The `create_and_validate_address` tool validates and structures location data, which is ideal for indexing. This ensures your knowledge base always contains accurate, verified addresses.
The server handles shipping address information via `create_and_validate_address`, as well as transaction details from `list_purchased_labels`. This requires careful handling of user location and purchase records in the index.
You run `list_purchased_labels` and feed that list into your knowledge graph. Instead of just seeing a raw file, you can query it semantically: 'Find all labels purchased last month that were over 5 lbs.'
Yes. You run `track_package_status` and index the results alongside other shipment metadata. This allows you to answer complex questions about a package's journey, grounded in actual API tracking data.
