Achieve atomic agreement using MCP Server

When two or more agents are debating a decision, you need guaranteed state changes. The `pipeline` tool lets you bundle multiple commands—like checking status and updating a counter—into one transactional batch. This ensures the final consensus is based on consistent data.

Track agent participation with Upstash and AutoGen

To manage which agents are involved in a debate, use Redis sets. The `sismember` command checks if an agent's ID belongs to the current discussion group. This is critical for role enforcement during multi-agent conversations.

Audit the entire system state with MCP Server

If agents get into a deadlock, you need visibility. Use `list_keys` and `key_type` to see what data structures exist in Redis. This gives your debugging process a complete map of all active conversations and stored context.

Setup guide

Set up Upstash MCP in AutoGen

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ installed
  • autogen-ext[mcp] package
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Install AutoGen with MCP

    Run pip install "autogen-ext[mcp]" autogen-agentchat. The MCP extension includes mcp_server_tools for stateless tool access.

  2. 2

    Fetch tools from the MCP

    Call mcp_server_tools(SseServerParams(url=...)) with your Vinkius endpoint. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Run your agent

    Pass the tools to AssistantAgent and call agent.run(). The agent invokes Upstash tools and returns structured results.

agent.py
from autogen_ext.tools.mcp import SseServerParams, mcp_server_tools
from autogen_agentchat.agents import AssistantAgent
from autogen_ext.models.openai import OpenAIChatCompletionClient

server_params = SseServerParams(
    url="https://edge.vinkius.com/[YOUR_TOKEN_HERE]/mcp"
)

tools = await mcp_server_tools(server_params)

agent = AssistantAgent(
    name="Upstash_assistant",
    model_client=OpenAIChatCompletionClient(model="gpt-4o"),
    tools=tools,
)

result = await agent.run("List recent Upstash data")
print(result.messages[-1].content)

Common questions about Upstash MCP in AutoGen

Always use the `pipeline` tool. By grouping read and write operations, you ensure that multiple agents can agree on a decision based on data that was modified as a single unit.
Yes. By checking the `key_type` before any write operation, you enforce schemas. Your agents won't accidentally try to run a list command on a string key.
Use sets when the order doesn't matter, but membership does. `sismember` is perfect for confirming if an agent or user ID has already contributed to the current debate.
Use `list_keys`. Remember that this command can slow down Redis on huge databases, so only run it when necessary to map the system state.
Manage sensitive keys by setting an explicit `expire` time. This ensures that once a conversation thread is resolved, its associated temporary data automatically gets deleted from the MCP Server.
