Handling Redis Hashes via MCP Server

The `hgetall` tool pulls all fields and their values from a given hash, making it easy for the whole team to get a complete entity view. If you only need one specific piece of data, use `hget`. You can also populate or update record details using `hset`. This is handy because if the key doesn't exist, it creates the hash structure from scratch.

Managing Redis Sets and Lists with MCP Server

For keeping unique items, use Redis Sets. Add members via `sadd` or check for membership quickly using `sismember`. You get all stored members by calling `smembers`. Need an ordered log? Use lists. Commands like `rpush` append data to the right, and you can pull specific ranges with `lrange`.

Executing Redis Transactions via MCP Server

When your application needs to execute several database steps as one atomic unit, use the `pipeline` tool. This sends all commands in a single JSON array structure. Remember that using this feature is powerful—it lets you model complex workflows like checking existence and then updating data in two separate calls.

Setup guide

Set up Upstash MCP in VS Code Copilot

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.99 or later with GitHub Copilot extension
  • Active Vinkius subscription with a valid endpoint token
  1. 1

    Open MCP configuration

Open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P / Ctrl+Shift+P) and run "MCP: Add Server". Select HTTP (Streamable) as the server type. VS Code will create .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace.

  2. 2

    Add the Upstash MCP

Paste the JSON snippet shown on the right into your .vscode/mcp.json. Replace [YOUR_TOKEN_HERE] with your endpoint token from cloud.vinkius.com.

  3. 3

    Switch to Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat (Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I) and switch to Agent mode using the dropdown. MCP tools are only available in Agent mode — they do not appear in Edit or Ask modes.

  4. 4

    Verify the connection

In the Copilot Chat input, type # to list available tools. You should see the Upstash tools listed. Try asking: "List my recent Upstash transactions" and Copilot will invoke them automatically.

Common questions about Upstash MCP in VS Code Copilot

You commit the configuration file, `.vscode/mcp.json`, to your repository. This makes the connection available team-wide. Once set up, Copilot Chat treats it like a built-in tool.
Use `incr` or `decr`. If the key doesn't exist when you call `incr`, the system initializes it to 0 first. This prevents errors and ensures your counters always start at a known value.
Yes, the `key_type` tool lets you determine what kind of data is stored under any given key. This helps your code decide which specific commands (like list vs. hash) to run.
Be careful about `list_keys`. While useful, it can be slow on very large databases. If you need to restrict your search, try adding a prefix like `prefix:*` instead of just `*`.
Copilot interacts with all primary Redis types: Strings, Hashes, Lists, and Sets. It allows your team to manage everything from simple counters to complex structured records.
